Round 30 - Waiting ... - Discussion Thread

This time the pictures are about waiting for something. Anything really, as long as the picture conveys it. The titles are all 'Waiting ...' where the '...' is whatever you like. Be creative, but consider that the aim of the picture is to actually illustrate your title. Choosing an idea and then creating a picture to convey that idea is good. Taking some pictures and then inventing a title is ok, since nobody but you will know, but try having an idea and then depicting it as a picture if you can.

This is the discussion thread, the entries must go in the entries thread.

Rules

1. Image must have been taken within the competition period, which is from Friday 20th October 2006 to Monday 20th November.
2. No image will be greater than 800 pixels along its longest side.
3. Image overall will not exceed 300kb (defined as 307,200 bytes).

If a submitted image contravenes rules 1 ,2 or 3 could people please mention this in the discussion thread so that the poster can fix it, some advice to the poster about how they might rectify the problem might be handy. No image which breaks any of these rules will be included in the voting thread so let's try to avoid a submission being left out due to not meeting the rules.

4. Each entrant can change their posted image at any time (using edit function) up to the closing date for submissions which is midnight UK local time on Monday 20th November 2006.
There has to be a closing date, so for simplicity the cutoff for getting the pictures on the thread is the one that counts. Note that the cutoff has moved to Monday night to make the best use of the weekend.
5. Maximum of three images per entrant.
6. Digital manipulation is allowed in order to correct technical issues. Sharpening, levels, contrast and colour adjustments are allowed as is the cloning out of minor defects.
7. If you feel the need to use other digital tools or effects then these must be fully documented so that people can learn how to use such tools/effects.
8. Image must be hosted so that it appears correctly in the competition thread using something like photobucket (http://www.photobucket.com/) or a direct link to the photo if you cannot do this.
9. Image must be titled but not on the image itself, i.e. some bold text naming the image should be posted above it. In addition, to benefit others, please post some details below the pic e.g. EXIF data or just aperture, shutter speed, exposure compensation, equipment used etc. (this is a learning exercise after all).
Note
For this competition only the picture titles are always of the form Waiting ... where you complete the phrase to make your own title.
10. There will be no posts in the Entries thread other than those for the posting of competition images.
11. There are no judges, only votes from Scoobynet members, their collective decision is final.
12. Voting should be 21st-23rd November, anyone with a Scoobynet log-in will be eligible to vote, not just those submitting pictures.
13. Images will meet the requirements of the ScoobyNet T&Cs
14. Winner gets to choose the theme for the next round.

Further to the announcement above, the idea of this subject is that it is easy to enter, since just about any type of subject or technique can be used. This should get those people who have been put off in the past to put an entry in.

However, a picture which really conveys anticipation, or maybe inevitability, is going to require some imagination. That's where the thinking and the planning comes in. This is about ideas.

The downside is that sunsets would probably qualify... :Suspiciou:)

Ah, you must mean the one in Entries. I suppose it could still be Brid...or Venice, or Looe.

Should retouching and editing be allowed??

I agree with selective cropping and filtering to achieve an effect, but if photoshopping an or other packages are used, is this really photography?

Er, YES! the art of photography does not stop when you press the shutter button.

and when does the art of propoganda start???

where do you seperate a poor shot from a good one?

anyone can take a poor shot and then get it edited to look good, whats the pleasure in that? when does a photo stop becoming a photo, and become a digital faximily?

i dont mind filter's or cropping, you havent changed anything, the shot is the same, but cleaning up noise and recolouring sections are after the fact, so to speak, that isnt photograpghy, its manipulation.

Take the earlier shot of the boats, the colour version was a mishmash, the B&W looked good. It could have been obtained at point of shot, using B&W film.

contrast it to the woman hanging out the washing, the only way her undergarments could have stayed red is to digitally edit the picture. So it was a vanilla photo enhanced by editing (appologies to the picture taker, its not a dig, just an example)

so i could take a poor shot of a landscape run it through photoshop and turn it into a corker. it may look good, but i wouldnt be happy to submit it.

Quite a lively debate went on this thread

Or selecting the camera's black and white/monochrome option. :thumb:

Let's all hug and enjoy the photo's people post. The judges will decide by their votes what they think is or isn't a good entry. :luvlove:

Would you charge for that ? I have some darn terrible pictures I've taken that I'd like to be corkers :lol1:

But I understand your point.

People have been manipulating images since long before the advent of digital. Even the films you use have a big impact on the final image, the original composition has to be right, and that has not changed.

As someone already said, you can't polish a t................. :D

The idea that Photoshop somehow performs majic and produces a good pic out of crap one is not really relavent when the above rules apply. Most of what is allowed under the above rules is what would have traditionally been done in a darkroom, and rule 7 is there to help people to learn them.

As has already been dicussed, we could have seperate threads to try out specific Photoshop techniques such as multiple exposures being combined to produce a 'high dynamic range' image. But that's not relavent to the photo comp really.

Anyway it's up to the voters to decide what makes a good pic ;)

I've been away for a while so bare with me, how long has this rule been in place where you have to use 'waiting..' as the start of the title? seems a bit daft to me, i'd prefer to be imaginative with my photo titles rather than be tied down to using the same as everyone else. I thought we were trying to sway people to not shoehorn photos into the comp purely because the title has the word 'waiting' in it.

Oh, and apologies for not voting last time, was out in deepest, darkest France without internet, pleased with the votes for mine, proves you don't need a 1Ds MkII to get a good photo. And well done to the winner, think that would of been in my top 2 or 3. :)

...and like Charlie says, alot of what you do in photoshop is what you'd do in the darkroom if you were using traditional processing techniques, but there is a point where you can go too far and *******ise the photo so it becomes unrecogniseable from the original.

I think the "waiting" tag was just put in by ricardo as a one off for this comp. I presume for the next one we go back to the "no mention of the theme in the title" rule.
