I know its prob easier to buy another camera but im contemplating having this one fixed, basic problem is that the display screen is black and slightly fuzzy when in shoot mode, switch to the mode for looking at prevoious photos and the picture is displayed correctly. It will not take photos, just darkness.

Can someone explain what is the technical term for this fault (not fooked either:nono: ) and a likely repair cost

Possibly a faulty sensor - not charging itself?

Repair cost is likely to be very close to buying a new camera. Chap here at worked has a compact which has a similar problem, he was quoted an initial fee of £ 75 to cover opening it and diagnosis, with parts and repair time extra.

He feels that the repair cost would be much better put towards a new camera.

I cannot see how they can charge that amount for a repair, surely they would go out of business because no one would bother having them repaired.

whatever creates the image the lense sees is broken, but what it is called i've no idea.

What's the make/model? Unless it's a fairly recent, quality camera it may well be uneconomic (or even impossible, if the parts aren't available) to repair.

The device that sits behind the lens where the film would go is called the sensor - it's a light sensitive microchip that picks up the image and converts it into digital form so it can be stored and processed.

When you're shooting, does the camera usually display any overlaid information such as focus points, shutter speed, zoom level, battery indicator and the like? Are they working, or is the whole screen black and fuzzy? If they're not working either then it's probably not the sensor that's at fault, which could mean a cheaper repair - possibly.

Finally, is it possible that you've put it into a manual mode by mistake and just set the exposure to be really dark? Point it at a light bulb and see what happens.

Andy, the model is a Kyocera S3x, its a basic model but i use when im out and about on the bike, it use to displays battery levels and something else but i cant remember what that was, the whole screen is black and fuzzy, there is no data display what so ever just black and fuzzy.

I was using it one day and all was fine, then 5 mins after i last used it the display went out, I will try it against a bright light and see what happens

cheers for your input

I had a fault with one of my digital cameras, I just binned it. Unfortunately, it is totally uneconomical to repair them.

If the camera is very expensive, such as some DSLRs, then it can make sense to repair, but for compacts, it's cut your losses I'm afraid.

The camera new was about £240 ish but i bought it 2nd hand for £50, it does a cracking job TBH and I appreciate your comment re binning it but considering I only paid £50 Im in 2 minds as to getting it repaired. If i could understand what is actually the fault :wonder: it may help me in deciding whether to bin it or not

Sounds to me as if a trip to Ebay could be in order. Sorry :(
