I've been commuting into central London for a couple of months now, using the bus lanes only when absolutely necessary and only where I knew there were no cameras.
This morning the traffic was *mental*.
I tailed some guy who basically used every bus lane, in full view of cameras and equipped buses. We got chatting at the lights and he said it *is* illegal but they don't actually do anything about it (for now at least).
Is this correct or am I playing russian roulette twice a day with a £100 fine?
thanks

You're playing Russian Roulette...with an automatic :(
We have the only capital city in Europe where bikes aren't allowed in bus lanes. It's being trialled on the A23 (?) from Brixton to Elephant but because they haven't found a compelling reason to say no, it's remaining a trial.
I farkin' HATE Ken and his ****e administration. Basically they can't sting us with congestion charging so they make it as hard as possible for us in other ways.
They will and do prosecute bikers for bus lane infringements. Maybe the guy was on dodgy plates?

Well, watching him ride, he didn't look the type to run dodgy plates, he said he'd been riding in from Kent for nearly 10 years and never had a ticket.
I know where the cameras are in my route to and from work anyway, I'll just stick to avoiding those specific lanes :)

The M4 bus lane is OK to use, but in Central London I wouldn't chance it.

Sorry, forgot the M4 lane. Yes, we're allowed in that as well. Boogaloo.

I've been commuting into the City of London for years and use the bus lanes as much as others do. I know where all the fixed cameras are so I do avoid the bus lane at those particular points and I also use the bus lane in front of buses. Unlike most cyclists I do however stop at red traffic lights.
It's about time Ken and his mob looked at other cities in England and see how they allow m/bikes in their bus lanes.....if Ken had his way I believe the whole of London would be pedestrianised.....

Sounds like you need to call the dyslexic plate maker for one of his "specials"……

Add the A23 from Thornton Heath up to Streatham as a "Bus Lanes OK" route :thumb:
Now all we need is another 400 miles of bus lane opening to bikes in London and we'll have caught up with the rest of Europe...

Been riding in and outr of london for years - never even realised it was illegal. Not one's ever hassled me, or given me a ticket.
Let's face it, it's an effort in London even to keep to the left side of the pedestrian traffic islands, esp if you go down the A13 and then towards tower bridge like I do every morning.
