Can anyone give any tips on good spots for photography on the shakedown stage?

Never had the chance to visit shakedown before.

Cheers

Last year we were at the start of shakedown and we got some great pics.

We even got to speak to a few of the drivers when shakedown was paused for a while (10 cars waiting in line right next to us).

The start is good for photos.
But all the viewing points are on different types of corner. J2 was good for a few shots last year until all the WRC cars discovered the big cut and virtually straightlined it. It was interesting watching the JWRC & privateers set up for the corner they reccied, and then falling into a trench on the inside of the bend:lol1:.
There's a wicked slippery sq L that's pretty much unreachable unless you get there very early. It's not an official viewing point, and you'd have to wait & walk the stage 200yds in either direction to get out.

i was wondering,i went to shakedown last year, hearded onto a bus etc but can you not park somewhere and walk to it and get a better view??

No it's not possible to get to anywhere other than the dedicated viewing points, without having to walk the stage at some point. And access is tricky (even on foot). And forget parking near to it altogether. Plod are out in force.
It takes me 10mins to Penllergaer wood from my house by mountainbike, and I reccied it before last year's event. Thought I'd found the perfect way in, and found it was closed on the day. I eventually made it in (my mate was marshalling an entrance), but missed the first hour of WRC action because of the long ride round to Forest Village. Get there early is my advice try & get on the 1st bus.

yeah, get there early like i did last year and stand in the torrential rain while A bus turns up.lol.it was good to see the recce but i felt they could have had a bit more speccy places.the one the majority of people were in it felt like being in a pig farm.

Just wondering if you can park in the M4 sevcies, and cross the rail track in to the stage

I did that 2yrs ago, but they clamped down on parking last year in the services. It might be worth a go though.

how can they stop people parking in the m4 services

macattac

They impose a time limit on parking, and clamp you if you're over.
I don't know how well enforced it is though.
i biked it last year to try & get to some better view points. But failed.

A question for those who recommended the start as a good location for photographs ...

Did you get the bus from the service park to shakedown? How far was the start from where the bus dropped you off?

Any help you can give is much appreciated.

Regards
Jay

The bus drops you off in a housing estate, then you got a 10 min walk in to the stage, about 3/4 a mile from the start. You can walk down to the start and get close to the drivers, but that 3/4 of a mile is the only offical spectating point. An up hill start up a straight a left hander which they were cutting then a short straight and a 90 right, that as much as you can see, not a very exciting bit of stage. But i took some good photos at the start.

They are not any where in the offical spectors sheep pen area, may be you have to sneak in early.
They do look good though
