I have an old back boiler with athe randall 102 timer etc. I had it serviced in summer and have only been using it for hot water daily since, thought i would switch the heating on to make sure everything was fine for winter then guess what, no heating????? the boiler fires up etc but its just doing the water and ideas on a fix???

I would check the room thermostat, pump and any motorised valves in the system first. MV's can stick or the motor fail.

The Pump could be anywhere on the system, however try the airing cupboard (where the domestic hot water cylinder is). ;)

The randall's are fairly bomb proof, so it will more than likely be the motorised valve (depending on the system type of course).

are the MV's the things in the pipes that only open one way??? how do you locate them???

Sounds to me like your three port valve is goosed. If your hot water is being heated then your pump seems to be working. If the three port valve doesn't divert the water to the heating however, all it will do is heat your water. The valve is usually located in your airing cupboard.

It looks something like this:-

If you take the cover off and turn on the heating alone, then turn on the hot water alone, you should see it move slowly.

A client had one recently that was going through all the right motions, so the motor and contacts were fine, but the actual valve inside was doing nothing, meaning all that the heating was on constantly.

Sounds to me like your on about anti gravity valve. By the sounds of it youve got gravity hot water and pumped heating so there wont be any motorised valves in the system.

The pump is probably siezed after not being used all summer. Just find it (could be in airing cupboard or sometimes under floorboards next to back boiler) Then undo the large cap on the top and spin the shaft with a screwdriver. That should get it going again.

Not always, I've got gravity water and pumped heating with 3 MV's. Two of them provide zoning so that I have independent control over the upstairs and downstairs temp.

Mine was goosed this weekend too, heard a right awful noise from the gear mechanism so removed the motor and the valve had stuck. Liberal application of WD40 & grease and its working again. You can buy new motors with universal back plates to fit existing valves.

CORGI only job I'm afraid & I doubt very much they will be there anyway...

Call someone qualified out, they will sort this for you no problems and it shouldn't be too expensive to sort anyway.

I'm CORGI registered but in Mid-Wales, go to CORGI's website to find installers in your area...

CORGI - Gas & the Law - About Your Gas Installer (http://www.corgi-gas-safety.com/section_gas_law/about_installer_find_installer.asp)
