Simon C 30 September 2006, 10:49 manfrotto 055 Pro and 486 head cost me 140. Damn good tripod for the money.
Digital Depot seem quite keen on their prices.
CharlieWhiskey 30 September 2006, 11:02 Get yourself to a large Jacobs/Jessops and try them out, there are several models in the Manfrotto range and heads especially are a personal thing.
Personally I've got a Benbo, for unusual angles and locations, but if you need a straight up tripod you will not go far wrong with the Manfrotto range :thumb:

Daryl 30 September 2006, 12:42 I've got a Manfrotto 055 CL (chrome) and 222 Joystick ball head that is surplus to requirements - the 222 is fantastic, really quick and easy to use - see here (http://www.manfrotto.com/Jahia/site/manfrotto/cache/offonce/pid/2311?livid=80|81&lsf=81&child=2) and Andy Rouse review here (http://www.warehouseexpress.com/arouse/ahead.html#man). Like new condition, would cost £165 from Warehouse Express.
£100 + postage.
kbsub 30 September 2006, 13:15 Thanks for all the suggestions , not too sure on the 222 , will it be OK on a 350D and 17-85mm ? The pic of it in use seems to suggest it fits around the lens .. or maybe not

The Giotto looks  and I'm tempted
As I'm on jury service the next two weeks I will be in Leeds city centre every day so will scout all the local camera shops and have a play with a few

I'd have that off Dazza. Good tripod and superb head, but maybe you should get to try one first - not everybody's cup of tea.
It will be fine for your 350D and 17-85. In the pic, the camera is fitted using a tripod collar on the lens, which you don't have, which is why it looks a bit wierd-ish.
Richard.

Thanks Richard ... I will have a look at the 222 joystick this week and see what I make of it , Hopefully Daryl will still have it for sale by the time I make my mind up
STi-Frenchie 01 October 2006, 09:11 I use the 222 head and it's brilliant.Very stable even with my D2H and 80-200 f/2.8 mounted on it so it'll have no problem with your 350D (it'll think it's on a picnic). Go for it, you won't be sorry.

AndyC_772 01 October 2006, 19:44 The 222 sounds like a nice piece of kit - I've a feeling I may even have tried one a few years ago but had my doubts about the weight it would support. It sounds like my fears may have been unfounded.
For what it's worth, I have a Manfrotto 468RC head on a Manfrotto Carbon One 443 tripod. The head is excellent - rock solid, smooth action with separate panning control, and no trouble at all supporting my 1D with 100-400L lens. The tripod itself is pretty good too - I bought it in particular for the quick action leg locks, which I preferred over the twist locks on the nearest equivalent Gitzo. The Gitzo was the more solid, though.
Both came from Fixation in London, who have a good selection that you can actually go and try out. They were cheapest too. Jessops 'World Camera Centre' in London has a good range to try too.
