View Full Version : Painting new plaster

We bought our house last Nov. from a developer who had done a lot of work on the property. Following substantial alterations and extentions, all interior walls had been re-plastered and freshly painted. Judging by the finish of the paintwork, most of this was slapped on at the very last minute and i'm not sure the plaster was dry or treated.

As a result of this, the paint on our bathroom walls had started to peel off in places so we have peeled (most of it does just that!:Suspiciou ) it all off leaving the bare plaster.

I have been advised that I should paint on a plaster sealant prior to re-painting with the bathroom emulsion. Is this correct? Or can I just paint directly on the plaster?

Cheers.

No need for any sealer... just use emulsion watered down half and half with water for the first coat.

I've variously been advised in the past to:

Paint new plaster with diluted vinyl matt, at about 3 paint one water, using cheapo trade stuff.

Paint new plaster with a 50-50 solution of polyurethane varnish and white spirit, this one very good for OLD crumbly lime-based plaster too;)

Paint new plaster with a sealant available from Screwfix, Wickes, trade counters etc.

Hi mate.

Im a decorator by trade. come across this prob alot.

You should always seal new plaster with p.v.a.
1 part p.v.a. to 5 parts water.

then use a watered down mix of emulsion.

then paint your colour ontop of that.

Hope this has been useful to you.
