Following on from my thread about the fact that I can't hold the 400D, is it worth me treating myself to the above lens for my 300D ?

I guess I would then sell my 18-55mm lens that came with the camera.

I've got a small ish amount of cash burning a hole in my pocket and want to spend it before my girlfriend nicks it for some new shoes :D

What you guys think?

David

I have one , Its a great walkabout lens , probably the most versatile lens in the Canon range , IQ is not up to L standards buts its better than the kit lens .Other alternatives are the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4.5 and the Tamron AF 28 -75mm although this might not be wide enough for you .The more expensive option is the Canon 17-55mm f2.8 (A lens I'm currently lusting after )but that's over £600 but receiving very good reviews at the moment .

I had one and IMHO it wasn't any better than the kit lens, apart from the IS. If you're going to spend £350, I think you need more than that. Perhaps you should consider the Sigma 18-125 - great range, image quality as good as the 17-85 and much cheaper.

To be honest, whilst I realise that you find the 400D uncomfortable to hold, it's so much better than the 300D, in so many ways, that I think you should persevere with it. :)

Wow - two replys at this time of night !

Thanks for the advice, before I go off to bed I'll read Hoppy's sticky thread again.

I'll try holding the 400D again, and then still not understand how you can buy something for £600+ . box it back up and get a full refund

Thanks again,

David

I have a spare EF-S 17-85 IS which is gonna go on Ebay soon as it's been replaced in my collection by the excellent 17-40 L & the amazing 24-105 L IS :)

IMHO the EF-S 17-85 IS is a decent lens and the IS makes it a very useful walk around lens :thumb:

I have just spent a good few weeks researching lenses in this range. In the end I opted for the Tamron AF 28 -75mm f/2.8. 2.8 across the whole focal length, it get's excellent reviews from almost everyone who has one, and is also mentioned to be as sharp as L glass by many..

Its amazing how things change in just a short period of time ... When the 350D was released in March 2005 the Canon 17-85mm was considered a very good lens and ideal walkabout for the 20D/350D , Phil Askey from Dpreview described it as "good but expensive " in his review of the 350D it was also well over £500

Now its "no better than the kit lens " and "decent"
Must say when I bought mine it was a world away from the kit lens I replaced it with , even with my untrained eye . surely things cant have moved on that much in 18 months ? Or have we all got more money to spend on L glass all of a sudden .:)
