Spotted this interesting cloud formation a couple of months ago.

A bit of research has revealed that its a Lenticular Cloud.

Looked more like a UFO cloud to me!

Ooooh.. otherwise known as stacked dinner plates, gets humble glider pilots very excited :D

They appear either over the top mountains where the air has to go up, or as a symptom of atmospheric wave - a standing wave in the atmosphere which can extend 100's of kms downwind, usually being triggered by... mountains. In the right conditions, each successive wave can get bigger for some distance downwind, which enables us to get to some truly impressive heights - Steve Fosset's perlan project recently set a new world record - 50,0000 ft in a glider, using wave.

To put it in perspective, that's 9.5 miles up, or some 2.5 miles above the cruise altitude of the average airliner

Lovely shot (sensor needs a wipe!) Velvia. I've only seen those once when I was in Corsica a couple of years ago. For a bit of a read about my holiday and some photos I took when I was there check this link out http://bbs.scoobynet.com/corsican-tale-broadband-t354211.html?t=354211&highlight=Corsica
