View Full Version : New helmet wanted.
hutton_d 27 July 2006, 19:58 Hi,
After a bonus this month it's new helmet time. I've had Arias for the last
few years and have been very happy with them apart from the noise. I've
heard that the Shoeis are much quieter and so would like any opinions from
those on here who may have tried both.
Also, if Shoei, which model - I think they have XR1000 and XSpirit or summat
.... :-)
Ta for any advice
Dave
merlin24 27 July 2006, 20:33 The XR1000 is just as noisy IMHO as the missis Arai Haga rep( Quantum F)
and my Arai Chaser.
All the lids look nice sat on the shelf in the showroom but you cant Road Test them
A mate of mine who rides a 'bussa has a Roof 010 Daytona helmet, and rates
it as the quietest lid he has owned.
:thumb:
Love my XR1000, most comfortable helmet I have owned to date, and the ventilation actually works on it..
Can't comment on the noise as I always ride with earplugs....
graham22 28 July 2006, 10:00 Get one that fits! - seriously, I always had Shoeis because I knew a size 55 would fit everytime, even bought 2 mail order & they fitted perfectly. Arais never seemed to fit as they went in even sizes (54 56 58). Shoei have now gone to even sizes and I couldn't find one to fit (despite trying several different models), and now I use an Arai Astro R size 57-58 which fits well.
A friend of mine used to insist on buying ex-display helmets as he felt these had already 'bedded in' to the correct size - leave you to your own thoughts on this.
Noisewise no different that the Shoei's unless the lower vents are open, as previous thread says, wear earplugs on long or fast journeys.
Re the Roof, my old man has one of these & he says his is quiet (but he is hard of hearing any way!) his only gripe with the Roof is that the lower front vent is straight through when it's open so this time of year his diet is mainly flies.
hutton_d 28 July 2006, 13:21 Tried an Arai Astro R and a Shoei XSpirit earlier. The Shoei fitted like a glove - the Arai wasmiles out. The guy in the shop (bike racer as well as assistant with both helmets himself and an Arai RX7) said as much as soon as he saw the Arai on my head .... They've always fitted well before but he reckons the've changed the shell shape.
So, XSpirit looks fav at the moment.Just got to get the exact fit on Sat. and then find the cheapest place ...
I agree - fit is everything. Plus I do wear ear-plugs - lashed out on made-to-measure ones a couple of years back.
Cheers
Dave
Enjoy my Shoei XR1000, but have to say it is a little noisey on motorways.
Great ventalation
hutton_d 30 July 2006, 08:25 Gone for the X-Spirit. Checked out a few helmets ar various outlets and saw this was the one I wanted. So made sure I knew what my size was and found it cheap on the old interweb ....
£320 delivered from Cissbury leathers if you're interested ... (plain silver). So at least my helmet will look good on the boys ride out ... :D

Nathan L 30 July 2006, 14:00 I've got a Shoei XR1000 and the optional chin curtain cuts out a lot of the air noise.
WRXTek 30 July 2006, 18:38 Arai all the way......but thats just a personal opinion
Nathan L 30 July 2006, 19:08 Its true what they say, you either have an Arai head or a Shoei! LOL :D

This is true. BUT my present/last helmet was an Arai, as was the one before that, and it fitted perfectly - but I bought the last one *last century* and when I tried them on this time the Shoei was a better fit. Which is the most important part of buying a helmet. The fact that *most* people who I had seen that had commented (not just on SN) said they were quieter as well and my mind was made up.
Seems both Shoei and Arai have changed their shell shapes in the last few/couple of years so if you get a new helmet now you may be surprised to find your head fits another brand better ...

mutant_matt 31 July 2006, 18:58 I've got a Shoei shaped head and have had a succession of them over the years. I always try an Arai come replacement time and they never fit.
However, I've now switched to Schuberth (a Concept followed by a C2) and I think the build quality of the Schubeth walks all over the Arai and Shoei lids!!!
I can't beleive how cheap the expensive A & S's feel now! The Schubeth is streets ahead, is super comfortable, has an internal Black visor, is very quiet (surprisingly so, TBH), and has a visor which you can push forward, whilst being completely shut. This means, for me, with glasses, they never steam up in the rain and also never get wet.
If you don't like the flip lids, then the S1 is the mutts nuts of Full Face lids, IMVHO!!! :)
Matt :)

ade748 13 August 2006, 12:53 Had an Arai for a year or two, then switched to a Shoei X-Spirit. Fantastic bit of kit, I now won't buy anything else. All day comfy, looks good and works exceptionally well. All the vents actually operate as they should, never steams up (either with a pinlock system or with a Respro mask), and the visor mechanism is unbeatable.
Bit pricey, but worth every penny.
Ade.
Quitest helmets available are those made by Schuberth. I have an S1 carbon, its quiet (I dont find any need to use ear plugs) light, has a built in dark visor, and is very comfortable to wear. Check out their website it has details of how they stack up against normal sports helmets.
ARRON BIRD 17 August 2006, 09:32 Always had Arai`s RX7 but done 3000 miles now in my Shark RSR2.
Very nice thicker visor that never mists up due to a coating and light weight.
I also believe that they carry out a stricter puncture test.
Very happy.
unclebuck 20 August 2006, 14:31 No Suomy wearers?
I have a Bayliss Rep Gunwind. Very light and comfortable.
andrewdelvard 21 August 2006, 17:46 Roof helmets. Comfy and quiet.....
