We are looking to buy a 3 bed detached property that was built in 1971.

The survey report has come back stating that the grage roof is lined with a cement/asbestos sheet. This I don't have a problem with as I know it was widley used.

however, there is a statement in the rear of the report that claims that due to the house age asbestos may of been used in the construction.

I have read a few online 'Asbestos in the Home' articles, but these seem to talk about pre-fabricated building, Flats and industry.

I expec the statement is a general disclaimer that goes into all this surveyers reports for houses built between 1930 & 1980, but it is really scaring my wife.

Where in a 3 bed detached property built in 1971 am I likley to find asbestos, and would it put you off buying it.

cheers...

Possibly the soffit (sp?) boards under the eves as well.

We have an asbestos roofed rear garage - I did some research on it last year:

- quoted £1500 to remove & take it away
- apparently fine in sheet form to remove yourself as long as you wear breathing mask and disposable overalls.
- local councils usually have free disposal service if you take it to them
- NEVER even contemplate walking on the roof - it's fragile and if you go through it'll splinter into your skin. mmmm.

I've ignored ours so far (probably won't keep the garage in the medium term anyway so not worth re-roofing) but it does leak and will need attention at some point - good luck!

occasionally to be found as boards where the sluice pipes run thru' the house, ie.. bathroom, even in corner of lounge in some properties..
