Assuming I didn't connect to handbrake ! lets get that outta the way;)

Have seen lots of different suggestions around the net (aerial, heatsink (?) etc)

Can I just make a short jump to the earth on the connector (ie couple of cm max) ?

Do they all need to be pulled down to 0v ?

Just earth it mate. That is what I did as I could not find where on the HB to connect it to;)

It worked fine.

Took the dash apart last night to test, if left floating you get handbrake message flashing on head unit, connect to 0v and video play back works fine :)
