I have a canon EOS 300 SLR which as i'm sure you know is good old fashion 35mm film camera. Now i would like to go to a digital SLR. The obvious upgrade would seem to be the EOS 350d. How much should i look to pay, does anyone know where they're on sale at a good price?

I'm not too fussed about getting a lens deal as i have some lenses from my eos 300.

Also are there any major advantages over the 350d from the 20d? Will mainly be used for holiday snaps but i may look into getting into paid photography work and using one of my qualifications instead of them going to waste.

The 350D would be the logical step to go :thumb: but you should try and handle one and if possible compare it to a 20D to see if you can put up with its small size and plastic body.

The 20D is much better built and less like a toy ;) now been replaced by the 30D of course.

www.jessops.com (http://www.jessops.com/search/viewproduct.cfm?PRODUCT=CANEOS350DB&refer=klk&tduid=3783f8410b879dacc95ecbeaaf5ec8b7) and www.amazon.co.uk (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00093GL2Y/kelkoocpc-electronics-photo-misc-21/ref%3Dnosim/203-0116796-5311940) both have the 350D body on sale for about £446 :thumb:

If you use this site you get a further £20 off the Jessop price:thumb:

hi,

we chose the 20D over the 350d for several reasons...

it has a better "burst" capability... as in how many pics it takes before it has to stop everything and write to the memory card - EXTREMELY useful in motorsport situations...

much better build quality and materials quality - the 350d and 300d before it are the entry level dslr's from canon and I think the 20d just seems a more professional piece of kit. IMHO naturally.

the quality of the pictures is astonishing, the capabilities of the camera seem endless... just need to ask yourself - what am I gonna use it for?... "holiday snaps" generally warrant no more than a very good comapct digital (we have a canon A80 too for this exact purpose)

figure out the critical performance requirements for your type of photography and see which one suits it best. then of course, handle them, use them and see which one u like best... then there's the price, for me the 20d is worth every penny...

hope this is of some use.....

enjoy what ever you decide to buy :)

Mikey :)

cheers guys. it is tempting to go for the 20d. i think i'll pop to jessops to have a look at them and then order from the net to get a better price.

Shop around Jessops are not that great on price any more. I work for a macWarheouse and bought my cwemra from Jessops as they always used to undercut us but didnlt check our prices to find we were far chesper than Jessops and doing some price comparisons theres nothing much in it but Jessops are certainly not the cheapest but to thier credit the advice they give it top notch

If you are going to look at the 20d you may aswell now opt for the 30d as it's around the same price as the 20d (Camera King = £779!). Has a larger LCD screen, bigger buffer and some other upgrades.

I went from a Minolta A1 to the 30d and the difference is incredible, startup time, ISO range, noise, 5FPS, image quality. At the moment, I can't see me ever needing to upgrade!

Be warned though, it's addictive and you start emptying your wallet on a number of lenses before you know it!! :D

You could always buy a 20D from the Canon Outlet (http://search.ebay.co.uk/search/search.dll?from=R40&satitle=canon+outlet+20d) on eBay. I think it's reasonable to expect that they are brand new and unused, they seem to go for between £500-£600.

Or you could make an offer on this one (http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/showthread.php?t=509797) :)

right went to the local jessops at lunch to have a look at them. the 20 and 30 are quite a lot bigger and look more up to the job, so will probably go for either of those.

although that said the work that i was trying to get is a no. so i may hang on to my £800 for while.

cheers for the help guys.
