View Full Version : What do you think to this 1?
Simon C 04 May 2006, 12:32 I was trying to get the guys face in shot but he kept moving the bass to cover his face!! Bloody camera shy bassists, mind you with his past I'm not suprised.
I'm thinking a little bit of a tighter crop to remove some of the space above his head.

ChefDude 04 May 2006, 13:37 honest answer?
if the focus was on his face and the guitar neck was a little to the left to expose his face, it'd be a shot i'd be really proud of.
we all know how hard this stuff is. i'm sure whoever invented fast auto winders was trying to get a similar shot!
Simon C 04 May 2006, 13:40 The focus was supposed to be his face, damn child actors!!!!
Still he loves it, I'm not so sure. I like it but for me its missing something and I don't know what. I like that fact the head and keys are the only thing are in focus but still..............
STi-Frenchie 04 May 2006, 14:24 Agree with Chef Dude Simon, the focus would be much better on his face. Guess you wouldn't have had time to shift the focus point to your right as it looks like it was set on the middle sensor hence the machine head being in focus.
Simon C 04 May 2006, 15:18 Its always set on the middle sensor, it never moves. I find it quicker to move the camera than the focus point.
Unfortunatly he could move 1.5m of head and neck faster than I could move the camera.
But I agree with you guys, teh head oof and cace in focus would have been perfect.
CharlieWhiskey 04 May 2006, 18:08 You never heard of manual focus? ;)
Simon C 04 May 2006, 18:16 Yes thanks :p
Sadly some of the crowd shots were done in mf.
There was another contibuting factors well 3 infact.
1) Ms. Becks
2) Ms Grolsh
3) A very cute blonde called Ali!!!!
Oh c'mon, you guys know me well enough now to know a female had to be involved!!!! :norty:
Just my opinion...
I disagree that the focus should be on the face. I think it works with the focus on the headstock. (Is that the right word?!).
Yes I would crop out the blackness above his head, and also I can't tell what the thing on the left is but I'd crop that too.
Other thoughts...
I like things that are grainy and contrasty.
It might be slightly homoerotic.
In a sense it is more of an arty photographers shot than the ones you have done of Emma, which are fantastic of course but they are more documentary in style, if you know what I mean.
Anyway, just my thoughts and I'll post my gig photos next weekend so that you can comment on mine :)
Simon C 04 May 2006, 20:38 Kuohu, take 1 guess at the thing in the background. All the info you need is given to you. Its not difficult, just have a 2 second think and you'll get it.
Simon C 04 May 2006, 20:41 And this is the more heavily cropped version.

I agree with Kuohu, focusing is just great as it is.
The lighting on the part that's in focus seems to justify the focusing, if you know what I mean.
Superb pic, works for me.

:wonder:
(2 seconds)
:wonder:
Okay I still wasn't getting it but just saved the pic and opened it in Photoshop and increased the light and can now see it is some sort of levels mixing deck. With beer cans maybe to the left of it?
It'll be my monitor that's the problem. I know this particular monitor is too dark and I would doubtless be able to see what it was if I went upstairs. I couldnt initially see your focuslive watermark either!
Sorry!
Edit: Like the new crop.
Simon C 04 May 2006, 21:08 Told you you could work it out!!! :thumb:
Exactly right, its a sound desk, with beer bittles and a pint glass too.
Been looking at this for the last 10 mins, flicking between the 2. I prefer the more heavily cropped 1, there was just to much black above him.
