View Full Version : Anyone got Solar Panels? messiah 29 March 2006, 19:16 Been thinking about incorporating some into a planned extension seeing as the government subsidise them - anyone got them and ow effective are they? richardg 30 March 2006, 08:03 i'm interested in this too. have only used them for power to provide courtesy lighting on a cart lodge so far. seem to work fine but this is only a very small system of course. you could go to interbuild (show) at the nec 23-27 april for more info. bound to be loads of people there supplying this sort of thing. i see them at trade shows all the time. www.interbuild.com Mog 30 March 2006, 17:47 I install solar panels for hot water systems, the best one I have found so far is made by Vaillant. The Gov funding has run out but a new scheme will be starting again at the end of April ish, PM your no. if you want a chat. Mog druddle 30 March 2006, 18:28 Mog Are there not systems that do water and central heating yet ? Dave Mog 30 March 2006, 19:28 Not yet, to put it into perspective 2 panels which are 1700mm x 800mm each will only produce 3kw in total which is fine for hot water but along way sort for central heating. Fuel cell boilers are going to be the thing to have in the next few years, there are a few running on test in commercial properties in Germany and they giving 130% efficiency. Mog Doc 30 March 2006, 22:18 Wouldn't the best heating to have in terms of efficiency be a ground heat pump? They quote 300-400% efficiency. Couple this with photovoltaic cells and you could have free heating (disregarding the massive capital outlay and the enormous size roof you would need ;) ) Seriously though what sort of payback time are you looking at with solar panels for heating water? How much does it cost for the average house? What is the lifespan of a system? Mog 31 March 2006, 18:54 Wouldn't the best heating to have in terms of efficiency be a ground heat pump? How much does it cost for the average house? What is the lifespan of a system? Ground heat Pumps are great but you need the land to install it!!!!!! A typical solar system from Vaillant including an unvented cylinder with double coil supplied and fitted is around £5-6,000 dependant on roof type, pipe runs etc. Payback is about 10 years and the life of a system is about 20 years. Solar will give you about 60-70% of your hot water needs averaged out over the year dependant on the orientation of the panels and what part of the uk you live in. ie Cornwall best and Scotland worst.
