Reliable estate cars for 5k

Well yes actually. If buy her a big enough estate I can use it for putting things in then by a totally impractical car for the summer. I will borrow either my mums or sisters landrovers for chasing pikeys off 'Moi lan'

I reckon Omega/Mondeo is a better bet than a German with a grillion miles on it. BMW/Audi are quality cars, no doubt, but things still wear out.
A newr Mondeo would be my pick, unless that's too big? Octavia maybe if you want it a bit smaller.
The Accord estate is a big car too.

Just for reference, I had an omega, never gave me much trouble. My Dad has had 2 omegas and a carlton estate and between the three has covered over 450,000 miles. One had a new gearbox at 150,000 miles and apart from that was fine. Has been said not as reliable as the Carlton but OK if cambelt is changed according to schedule.
My mum had loads of problems with her Audi as has a mate of mine.
Doesn't matter anyway, The Omega or Volvo will be FAR better value for money than the Audi/BMW however the Audi/BMW will be a 'nicer' car with better interior although older/higher mileage so more to go wrong, suspension especially on bigger cars that you're looking at. Up to you if that's worth paying the extra for.

His current car is a 320CDi E Class tourer which is on it's second Autobox in two years, parking sensors have failed and the dash rattles.
He's had enough of the Germans, he's just bought a nearly new Mondeo TDCi GhiaX Estate from a supermarket.
He'll loose around £8k in three years on the Mondeo which is far less than he's lost on the BM's and Mercs.
Just got fed up with being taken for a ride by dealers who don't give a stuff.

Don't like mercs as they seem very unreliable. Seems a mondeo is reccomended but I just don't see fords as solid enough.. An accord seems a very good idea but I can't find any on autotrader that are estate. So a volvo or a honda seem the best bet. I guess its up to her which she prefers.

Be an old duffer 
and get a Rover 75 Tourer. They always seem to score highly in the owner satisfaction surveys, and they're cheapish. Doubt you'd get an MG version for that money though.
