Hey all maybe someone can shed some light on this,

Like many i bought my car second hand and someone previously has used some sort of "back to black" style stuff all over my engine.

Its NOT "back to black" as that comes of but this stuff it like a heavy gooey resin almost.:Suspiciou
Over time dirt has stuct to it and its on bloody everything, especially my pipes and plastics. Ive tried all sorts to get it of even scotchbrite and neat TFR (traffic film remover).:confused:

This Sh*t wont budge for love nor money and i dont know what else to try :(:brickwall :brickwall :brickwall

This pic was taken when i first bought the car and you can see that on the black stuff, especially cam belt covers, headertank, battery box it appears like a stick whiteish gunk, (no its not spunk!!):lol1:

Looks strangely like JohnS's engine bay, which we'll be attempting to sort out in a weeks or two's time. I'm going to hit his with P21S Total Auto Wash as it's the strongest APC/degreaser I have in my arsenal. Spray on liberally, wait 15 mins (agitating really cruddy bits with a stiff toothbrush in the meantime), then rinse off. If that doesn't work I'll be stumped, and off onto the detailing forums for some advice. :)

Looks like the protective coating put on by Subaru for transport. Yes it is a pain in the arse and is difficult to get of your hands. Did mine with a steam cleaner and industrial truck wash, there is a big debate about how to clean. some say with engine running to help dry motor, I was told leave for 24 hours to ensure all moisture had gone from the connectors. Not to bad in sunny cyprus where I bought my car but in the UK it would probably freeze the way the weather is at the moment. Possibly best method is do small area at a time and use low pressure hosepipe.

I picked up some engine cleaner/detailer for £5 from halfards (Some Carplan product) sprayed the cleaner and rubbed with a brush and then jet washed the engine, I covered the induction kit/Maff and the alarm with freezer bags.

Mine was really dirty before, I didn't even know the HT leads were red!!!!!!!

Yes its a protective film, applied at the factory.
I did manage to remove it from Supertourings sti, with a strong degreaser and lots of elbow grease.
THe film startedto turn cloudy green colour as it reacted with the degreaser.
For the patient/ perfectionist only I think.

Used CD2 from halfords....very easy to use, came up a treat! :D

I think halfords have stopped selling CD2, Only old stock left in stores. I've looked and asked in a couple of branches and told they no longer sell it.

Yes, it's the horrible green waxy stuff that gets applied I think by Subaru UK when the cars come into the country. Over time, it gets sticky and picks up all the dust that blows in through the radiator, and also the dust off the belts/pulleys etc.

Mine currently looks worse than the one pictured above! I have heard that others have used "Gunk" to get rid of it - it's horrible stuff to get rid of.

Don't know if I'm missing the point here - but if Subaru have put this gunk all over the engine surely they must have done it for a reason?

I wouldn't want to remove this junk only to find that all the salt off the roads here in the Uk had corroded the lot away a couple of years later!

I think I'm going to leave well alone, unless someone can convince me otherwise!

think api use the same stuff on their rebuilds as well
