Thought some of the rookies to the hill climb game for the 2006 SSC would like to see the very basics of preping your car for the races.
All based on my 13 years of doing it and having zero probs with Scrutineering.

1
Basic car:
http://tinypic.com/juwpy8.jpg

! Make sure it is clean when they get to you (important!)
2
Time strut in place and correct size.
http://tinypic.com/juwqdt.jpg
! Must be right size and distance off ground. Must be matt black.

3
Towing point location
http://tinypic.com/juws2t.jpg
This shows the marshals where to fix the bloody great hook to drag your pride and joy out of the scenary...(red arrow)

4
Ignition cut-out sticker and I've added my blood group to as it's a bit rare..
http://tinypic.com/juwsn8.jpg

5
Race seat, roll cage and boy racer gear knob (surprisingly useful)
http://tinypic.com/juwt28.jpg
Note heavy-weight interior!

6
Racing seat, about 5Kg with runners adapted to Impreza slides for road comfort. You need to sit closer to the wheel for the race.
http://tinypic.com/juwtn8.jpg

7
Battery neg lead taped with Yellow tape for a long length
http://tinypic.com/juwvax.jpg
Make sure that your battery is ready tightened down and the whole engine bay is clean and OIL FREE.

8
Magnetic number panels. They must be big enough for the 9'' race numbers. Some print the numbers on the PC and stick them to the inside of the rear side windows. Numbers must be in stark contrast to body colour. Mica Blue and black numbers on a white panel is perfect.

9
Remember your sponsors (thankyou powerstation for my AST's!)
And make sure you exhaust is no greater than 108 dB at 66% of red line revs or you will not race.
http://tinypic.com/juwyer.jpg

10
This wheel is strictly illegal for hill climbs/motorsport though I've never been stopped.
The centre badges have to be removed as they may fly-off and hit a spectator. The wheel nuts must be steel (!) and should be open ended so they can see how many threads are engaged. Impreza nuts are closed and domed. I had my 911 stopped years ago for using domed alloy nuts (standard fit on early 911's. I argued the point and was allowed to race on the day, but warned to change them!).

11
Overalls and crash hat will save you. They must be to the blue book. The helmet has to have the lables, purchased at the track. Not sure, but I think Motorbike helmets are NOT allowed (different standard I think)
Any damage to your hat and you will be stopped there and then.

12
Finally, you need to get all the advantages you can legally, so remember the aerodynamic aids that come with the car!

Hope this might help you all along the way.

Must be very soon? Turning the 1/2 Century doesn't hurt too much.
In these times of stress and strain, be happy you got there!

Graham, any chance you can make this a Word document and up-load it to the SSC Group site File area? I'll do it you prefer...

Graham

Can you share with us where you get the magnetic number panels please?

Cheers

They are available 'off the roll' from sign companies in general.
Lots of White Van Men use them too.

The real trick is to smear vasalene (sp) onto the white surface and apply race numbers straight away. This ensures that they peel-off just so easy after the event. A works BMC rally driver told me that!

They are expensive, mine cost £45 for 2 but you can pre-number them before leaving for a meeting. One thing less to do at the event.
I warm mine on the bonnet after I arrive and this makes them very pliable when you lay them onto the doors.

To be clear about the wheel:
Keeping the center inset and the stock wheel nuts is strictly illegal. The actual wheel is fine.

Graham.

That wheel nut thing will be a pain...I've not seen any open ended steel wheel nuts with the right taper for Impreza wheels, let alone the BIMEC type required for my OZ's

With regards to stickers, that vasalene trick works on paintwork before applying stickers too...learnt that off my dad when applying a GB sticker to the back of my '68 Mini before going on a booze cruise to France as a student, you wouldn't beleive how much you can cram into a Mini with no rear seats...and the competition bump stops helped, it rode on them all the way home but still looked ok ;)

Would that make it a go kart?
I am ignoring the nut thing. I think TEGSport sell them at about £4 each!
I'll ask AS Performance today as Alyn seems 'normal'.

Graham.

When I was a student all we did (successfully) was to drink the SU bar DRY.

Open Ended taper nuts (http://www.priracing.co.uk/section.php?xSec=82&xPage=2&jssCart=0569320fedddae1fb966ab1cf0c9466b) at 1.10 each...which is a bit more sensible...

I wonder if cutting the dome end off standard nuts would cause problems? ;)

I wonder if cutting the dome end off standard nuts would cause problems? ;)IMHO, if you cut the dome off the standard nutsyou would alter the torque loading settings ie:- the o/h of the nut would be shorter which would give less radial twist therefore a risk of under tightening of the said wheel nut, which could lead to possible oop```````````s

Hope i got it right..:wonder:..Only 7 hrs to go till i join the 911 saga team:norty:

Have spoken to Alyn at AS Performance who can do the right nuts with the right form for Impreza wheels.
Price to follow, but about £2 each.

As to the '911 Saga Team' we'll thrash the arses off the Whippersnappers; We'll be long gone when they are still finding first (that's top left, right?)..at least I wont be alone...

Bad news is I can't do 4 events as there are clashes with the other 2 Championships, so can't deceide to watch or to play ar 3 of them..bet I can't resist!

Graham.

Only12 weeks to go till Curb...my car's ready, is yours?

You'll have to compete in those dates which dont clash or it will like you're running scared from a more competitive hill climb series :norty:

Yes, you are correct, but there are time pressures too!

I could do Curb/Loton/Prescott

I stand a chance at all three...maybe.

Graham - Loton dates in the diary.

I spoke to Dave Parr in July 2005 (Liverpool National B Event) and the updates to the hill since 2004 were great.

Graham, you stand a good chance with Loton and Wiscombe being on the same dates as SSO and TOTB, Paul and I are unlikely to be there for either of those :p ;) :D

so: The Bully Boys are around!

Have two sets of wheels, one for the road 17's and 16's to race on.
Diff lock kit is a Good Mod.
Loton has a few parts that bite very hard if you go wrong. Beware, we had 2 air ambulances last year.
I'm doing the Leaders and the Midland Champ this year as last year so the SSC has to fit in somehow. I have to mow lawns and sponsor my daughter, and the wife likes the odd 'Car-free' holiday ( :norty: ).

I welcome all the antics, the threats, the grief, the 'banter/bullsh!t'/ the interrogation, but on the track someone will be chasing/leading someone...

As the Wizard AndyF says, 'every little helps' although there is a weird Scottish saying he uses that is hard to understand but he runs 200mph+ so i guess he knows a bit :norty:

Seriously doubt it makes any difference but amuses the Big Guys in the paddock.
