Have just bought a helmet from ebay, problem is the previous owner has made it stink!!!! (fags, sweat etc)

Any ideas what i can use to make it smell fresh? Have tried Febreze, but it made no difference.

Cheers

Great name for a thread :D

I assume the lid isn't marked etc, I would be a little weary of buying one from E-bay myself. You only have one head. Well one on your shoulders anyway :D

Try sticking a household air freshener in it for a couple of days solid and see if it kills the old smell off.

Personally I would never buy a secondhand helmet, you dont know its age (for certain) and if its been dropped or something. its illegal to sell 2nd hand helmets in the newspaper classifieds.

But the lining should be removable and you can wash it. That should make it smell sweet.
Better going to the BMF's or Ally Pally show for good quality NEW bargain kit, especially helmets.

Forgot to say the helmet is just for track days use in my car, and maybe go-karting.

I'd still value my head the same........although I understand what you mean.

urrgh :nono:
NEVER buy a second hand helmet - a new one is'nt that much
As per r32 - could have had a hard knock to it - you have an accident and the helmet splits like a watermelon (possibly so does your head)

However to answer your question, you can buy proper sanitizer probably from any bike shop :thumb:

If your keeping it try spraying it with Autoglym Autofresh, that`ll freshen it up :)

But just to echo the above, never buy a secondhand helmet, whatever.

yep, bin it. secondhand helmet just isnt worth risking your life with. You dont know its history.

But.....had a 2nd hand one when I first started riding (16yrs old - 18 yrs ago) and treated the interior with surgical spirit (from chemist) killed all the germs / gunk. and was fine after that. Just glad the lid was never needed to protect me!

Cheers guys.

Will only use it 2-3 times a year, so not massivly fussed about it's history. Saves having to hire one from the circuit where i wouldn't have know the history of the helmet i was going to be wearing anyway.

Won't be going fast enough to need it i expect!!!

Many thanks

Gary

take it in the shower and fill with warm water and baby shampoo and mix about a bit and lather up.then run shower into helmet until all water is running clear.then place on paper for a few days some where warm to dry out

2nd hand helemts suck when it comes to the crunch as all above had said

Personally I would never buy a second hand helmet but thats just my own opinion. Even if i'm only using it a couple of times a year.

I use Yoshimoto Lid Cleaner (http://www.motrax.co.uk/Maintenance/Yoshi_lid.html) during the summer months... Also Febreze fabric spray does the job.....

I know you have said you have tried Febreze, but try again getting it absolutley soaking, then leave it in a warm air-ing cuboard, always shifts the damp smell from mine.

Got be better than ones they supply at kart tracks though.
I swear the one I wore once has that fuzzy mould growing in it

That's the last time I forgot my helmet when karting.

A combination of dettox antibacterial spray, febreeze, "PediTech" (stuff for smelly feet) and Lynx, All sprayed in every few hours leaving 5mins between each type of product used, and keep doing it for a few weeks - that should do the trick :)

That's what worked with getting the "old dog" smell out of a Rover I once bought (and that was after I wet-vacced it all with teh karcher cleaner ). ;):D

It's not just accident damage, and sweat etc that you have to be wary of when buying a '2nd hand' helmet.

Used to know a biker who, after a hard night on the p!ss, went out for a spin on the back of a mates bike wearing his new helmet. Feeling particulalry delicate he puked into his helmet ( didnt have time to open the visor or anything)...

He apparently scraped out the vomit, gave it a quick wipe out and returned it to the seller saying it wasnt the helmet for him...

I pity the poor chap who brought it after him... :nono:
