View Full Version : Rally Supercar Day @ Castl Coombe
Hi peeps.
The club is hoping to have a sizeable presence at this forthcoming event at Castle Coombe on May 5th.
There will be track time available, as well as rally car demos, displays, trade stands, etc. A sort of 'Rally Trax' if you like. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif

Stef,
Castle Coombe has quite strict noise checks. Do you know anywhere we can get ours checked before the event?
Thanks
Sonu
IWatkins 18 March 2001, 18:14 Go and buy a sound meter from Maplins or somewhere, that way you will always know http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif
You can pick them up starting a 40 pounds or so.
Cheers
Ian
Ian,
I've heard that these devices are grossly inaccurate.
Thanks
Sonu
IWatkins 18 March 2001, 19:15 Sonu,
Yeah, I thought the same. But a current project at work requires the recording of peak noise levels from a point source at varying distances. We need about 40 of the units for the experiment/trial we are going to do.
So before we purchase, we are evaluating 18 different devices ranging from the cheap hand-held units for 40 quid from Maplins etc., right up to a kit that costs in excess of 25k.
All devices have been to a test lab and the complete spectrum has been thrown at them.
The full on expensive kit came top (obviously) but does need calibrating every time it is fired up and is stupid expensive. But the Maplins hand held and a few other sub-£100 units came out a lot better than those in the £100 - £1000 range and beat almost half of the units in the £1000 - £10000 range too.
So, in this case you do not always get what you pay for. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif
I think half of the inaccuracies reported are caused be people just not knowing how to use said devices. I.e. which range to have it set to, at what distance to measure the source, whether they even have a device suitable for measuring sound levels from exhausts (may are not) etc.
Cheers
Ian
Rannoch 19 March 2001, 01:46 I got thrown off Castle Combe.
BPM d/p, HKS HIper - it is quite loud - measured 105db. The noise limit varies on different days - usually 98db with a man standing behind your car. Not the sensible approach that they take at Donington!

baldrick 19 March 2001, 14:46 Stef, could you tell me when tracks 2001 will be held at Silverstone as I am planning to run the Great North Run on 16 September and need to know whether the dates will clash.

DAVE-W 19 March 2001, 22:53 Greg,

T5NYW 29 March 2001, 12:14 Stef,
Noise Limit
100db measured at ¾ max revs, 0.5mtr from exhaust outlet at a 45° angle.
Additional silencing available, click here to enquire for details.
Day Plan
Typically only 6 cars will be able to run on track at any one time. This means there is plenty of track space for all and sessions are in a relaxed format. After the compulsory lunch at 12pm, sessions move over to the “monitored open-pitlane” system.

kernel 17 April 2001, 14:22 Any news on what is happening? Spoke to an chap on a stand advertising the event yesterday at the Castle Combe race meeting. He reckons to have in excess of 50 EVOs there on May 5th. How many Scoobys can we muster.
Cheers
T5NYW 18 April 2001, 23:06 Stef,
What time do we need to get into Castle Coombe, and are Tyres Northampton crew attending.
Tony

JeffIV 26 April 2001, 19:48 I believe the latest count to now be over 80 EVO's and more being added daily, going to be the biggest EVO turnout ever!!!!
No worries....
JeffIV
Tony.
Details and tickets will be sent out shortly and yes, TN will be there.
I believe we have about 60-70 cars going at present, but then we wouldn't want to outnumber the organising club would we? http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif
Stef.
