View Full Version : Cameras on plane-weight
walkpau873 21 December 2005, 15:17 Hi
Im off on Hols tommorrow to Dubai and ive just put together what camera gear i want to take with me. The 1D, 70-200 F2.8 IS, 24-70MM F2.8, 16-35MM F2.8, Speedlite, Lightmeter, spare battery and charger, 5gb memory, polarizing filter and all that in the bag comes in at a staggering 28 kilo.
Im not going to put it in the hold because it wouldnt last 5 mins and want to take it on as hand luggage, but do they weigh the hand luggage now or not. If i just pretend its a normal rucksack will they take any notice and not realise it weighs so much. I really dont want to be stuck in Heathrow if they say its in the hold or not at all.
Help please
Paul:)
CharlesW 21 December 2005, 15:34 Paul,
What else have you got in the rucksack? The camera and lenses come to less than 5 kg according to the specs i have looked at.
My experience of carry on bags is that provided they fit in the overhead lockers, and that you can put them there without busting your gut, no-one will bother you. What class of ticket are you travelling on? Economy allows
7 - 10 kg depending on the airline. Business allows 10 - 20 kg.
I have travelled with a 20D, kit lenses, 28-105mm USM II, 100-300mm USM II, camcorder, binoculars and various chargers without any problem. If you are still concerned contact the airline.
walkpau873 21 December 2005, 15:48 Hi Charles thanks for the reply, ive just weighed the 200mm lens and that 4.5 kg alone. Ive just rang Etihad Airways and my allowance is 7kg, yep were going bucket class! Damn, dont know what to do.
Paul
walkpau873 21 December 2005, 15:57 Charles- you could be right, ive just checked canons website and it should be a lot less, im going to check on my neighbours scales, didnt think id panic so much over a few camera bits.
Gutmann pug 21 December 2005, 15:58 Im staggered that that small amount of equipment weighs 28KG.
A suit case filled with mine and the missis (and she knows how to pack) gear for two weeks in Florida only weighed 26KG.......You sure its KG and not pounds :D

Simon C 21 December 2005, 16:01 ive just weighed the 200mm lens and that 4.5 kg alone.
Paul
WTF!!!!!!!!! I hope your scales on the blink. How the Fcuk do you hold that steady. My 70 - 200 weighs in at 1.3kg. If having an IS lens means a 3.2kg weight penalty it can fook off and I'll get down the gym.
Simon C 21 December 2005, 16:03 Warehouse Express's site list the Canon 70 - 200 at 1.45kg, whats yours made of? Lead?
To give you an example 28 kg is 62lbs, thats what squadies carry on their bag going to war!!!

Gutmann pug 21 December 2005, 16:58 8KG still doesnt equate to 28 pounds ........ Another excuse required please :D
walkpau873 21 December 2005, 17:05 I know, i took out the bag the 200mm comes in and all the instruction manuals, and the charger and the lightmeter and a couple of frozen tubs of Frenchies Curry, and my wifes make up bag:D So im down a bit on weight now and ready to go:cool:
Who ever sets the next comp, can the theme be- Amazing architecture in a sunny climate or Sand or ............................I`ll get me coat, doh, i mean flight tickets.

Paul:)
Gutmann pug 21 December 2005, 17:13 Have a good one...........
CharlieWhiskey 21 December 2005, 17:13 What type of scales are you using? Most bathroom scales arn't that accurate for such weights as they are made to weigh people in the range 60-100kg:wonder:
Gutmann pug 21 December 2005, 17:37 Maybe he is used to weighing in 8th's ...... :D
Only joking.
Gary
KiwiGTI 21 December 2005, 20:43 I think you'll find that they are extra strict on the weight requirements now for most airlines. Fo whatever reason they are enforcing the limits rigously, even in business class. (apart from some of the budget airline idiots)
missyc 21 December 2005, 21:07 Hee hee :p Easily done I guess :lol1:
I just looked up some pics on the web and WOW (http://www.dubai-fotos.de/) :D
Have a great time Paul
ChefDude 22 December 2005, 10:42 when we went to Bonaire on KLM (early december)
We had, as hand luggage...
1 D70 bag (shoulder carry)
1 70-200VR in nikon case (shoulder carry)
2 backpacks, each 10kg
Suzy had a handbag
cargo luggage was 2 suitcases full of dive gear, including an evil looking 5" diving knife - together 40+kg
no problems :D
ChefDude 22 December 2005, 10:45 our flights went through amsterdam tho
LHR-Amsterdam-Bonaire-Amsterdam-LHR
the security at Amsterdam is *tight*. both directions, we got checked properly! the guy checking me made me cough if u know what i mean! and Suzy got the same including some checking down her bra too  (by a female guard, btw)
andym172 23 December 2005, 10:43 "Since September 11, 2001, travel restrictions on carry-ons and checked luggage have caused quite a bit of stir in the photographic community. I carry all of my camera gear with me onto the airplane, and check my clothing and camera accessories underneath. Am I crazy? Perhaps. But I don't think so. I would rather have a sore back from carrying everything than have my gear stolen or broken. Since we no longer enjoy the luxury of locking our luggage, I have no other options other than carrying my equipment with me. I remove all unnecessary weight, such as my camera batteries and chargers. I fit all but my 500mm lens inside of my backpack, which weighs around 30 pounds. Since I normally fly on KLM airlines to Tanzania, their carry-on weight limit is around 22 pounds. Prior to check-in I remove my 1-series camera and 24-70mm combo, along with my 16-35mm lens and other heavy items and tuck them in my photo vest. Suddenly I am close to within limit. I check-in, and put back my gear in the bag once out of sight of the ticketing agents. Voila.
I find hand carrying the 500mm on a plane has its advantages and disadvantages. First, I seriously doubt that any airline employee with require me to check the lens by itself, because of obvious damage that will occur. This is considered my 'personal item', which is allowed. I suspect that hand carrying this lens over my shoulder is the least risky of all methods, but is no doubt a burden."
