View Full Version : Am I going loony
Simon C 17 December 2005, 18:50 Cos I'm thinking of buying a film body. Now I have an old canon which I have to give back to the parents at some point, and I use Nikon :p
I've always liked using film, there is just something about it thats missing in digital for me. Lenses are not a problem either as I have just realised that 99% of my lenses are FF compatible. Done by complete accident but ensures future compatability unless Nikon move away from the F mount.
Now I've got my eyes on a nice second hand F5!!!!! Anybody on here got any experiance of using 1?
Now where did I put that roll of Ilford B+W?
IWatkins 17 December 2005, 22:34 You can throw an F5 really hard at someone and when it hits them in the head, it really hurts.
Once you retreive it from the ground, it'll probably still work (if you are lucky).
Long story.... :) :)
But, yes, good camera, only as good as the lenses and film used though. I hate Nikon dslrs with a passion, but love the film bodies from Nikon.
Cheers
Ian
Simon C 17 December 2005, 22:39 Awwww, you can't leave it at that, sounds interesting :D
STi-Frenchie 18 December 2005, 01:06 Simon, I used a Nikon F4S and an F5 for years. Saw one (an F5) going second hand in my local dealers last week and was tempted to go for it. Top notch camera, never let me down once and I punished it. The F4S was the same -- took it to some extreme places and it functioned perfectly every time although the AF was slow compared to nowadays. I would consider buying an F6 but my current interests photography-wise would be better suited to medium format. If there's anything you want to know about the F5, let me know but the bottom line is that it's a cracking piece of kit.
STi-Frenchie 18 December 2005, 01:16 Oh, and of course, you can use it with ISO film speeds lower than 200 which I definitely miss. Digital Velvia is not the same thing as the real deal :(
Simon C 18 December 2005, 01:18 Cheers mate, I'll take you up on that when my head ain't spinng from too much vino :D
Basically I want a body thats not too different in terms of handling and functionality from my D70s. Mainly to bang rolls of Illford through at the nicer indoor venues and summer gigs usilising the nice 50mm I bought yesterday. OMG how fast is the AF on that lens!!!
Would be esspecially nice now as teh D200 fund has just taken a sever knock (redundancy).

Echo'd here, don't think the D200 at ISO 100 would be a patch on it either.

Sorry to hear that Simon.
Look at it as a fresh start mate :) Hope things work out well.
(Went through redundancy myself almost 2 years ago when the company I worked for went into administration - only basic settlement from DTI boohoo)
Simon C 18 December 2005, 14:15 Not unexpected as I'm a contractor (but not in the true sense of the word), The problem comes in the form that I may be moving at the same time I'm looking for a new contact. I love stress me :wonder:
555-Shaggy 19 December 2005, 14:08 Blimey, sorry to hear that mate.. You'd better love stress if your putting yourself through moving at the same time..
Hope things work out for you.
Simon C 19 December 2005, 14:55 Just a pity I'm not good enough or have enough contacts to turn pro at gig snapping :( If I could get enough cash behind me to live off for a year I'd consider it.
STi-Frenchie 20 December 2005, 07:58 Sorry to hear about the redundancy Simon. What about trying the local papers to see if they'll give you any freelance work? It's a start...although I don't suppose it's going to pay too well.
Simon C 20 December 2005, 09:18 Thanks guys :D but the whole redundacy thing is wierd at teh mo, the company said we were goijng in May, now we may not be going at all, or in a years time. I'm confused, but acting as if its all going to end in may, expecting the worrrst anything else is a bonus.
Good news though :D As you all know I took some pics of some very photographic females (No I'm not gonna post them up again). Well I have just heard from their webmaster that they are awaiting official sign off to be used on the girls website :D What a cool christmas pressie, ok I'm not getting paid for them but I didn't pick up a camera to make money. You never know, if the management let me become the offical forum snapper I may be getting alot more practice :D
