Thinking about getting on of these as a cheap good-looking (IMO) car after christmas.

Lots of reasons but they seem reliable, quickish and dont fall apart too badly!!

Any opnions?

My mate used to have one.

Nice looking cars and fairly well equiped if you can see past the badge snobery!

He had problems with his though. The piston rings and cylinder bores were worn, causing it to use oil quicker than it was using petrol!

 

Cylinder heads are also a problem

 

I used to have a 216 coupe

Got to admit it never let me down and i only sold it cos i wanted an Audi Cabriolet. Honda engine was pretty good

 

Cocker, yours had a Honda engine and were pretty much bullit proof!

 

the honda engines are brill, the rover T sieres are cr*p!!

Yeah.

 

2.0 Litre - T series (1993 - 1997?)
1.6 Litre - Honda Engine (1993 - 1996)
1.6 Litre - K series (1996 - 1998?)
1.8 Litre - K Series (1996 - 1998?)

You can tell the later 1.6 and 1.8 (1996>) as these have the interiors from the bubble shape R200s (rounder dash with no shelf)

 

Later 1.6's were K's though... P-Plate onwards that is.

Yep, get the Honda, I had an auto for a bit, just a cheapy to sell and make some money, my Fiat Coupe died so I used it for a month or two and it was a damn decent little motor, 120,000 on it and sweet as a nut, my dad had one as well, a manual, absolute minter and fairly nippy (auto wasnt !), the 2.0 has 130 ish bhp and the 1.6 Honda has 115 iirc, the Rover unit is torquier and a bit faster but they do seem to be more problematic than the Honda unit. The handle ok with limited power, different rear suspension to the saloon's and hatches, independent instead of a beam (I think thats it).

They are, whatever people say, still a nice looking car and sell surprisingly easily, my dads went to daughter of my mums mate, she ruined it, it went from complete minter to a battered, littered filled, *** burnt shed in six months, first car, no money, mum put money on the mortgage to help her out and she ruins it the silly cow !

 

I have a Rover 216sli 5 door at the moment which has the same engine as the 216 coupe. The engine is very rev happy, but lacks torque....typical 90's Honda unit. Very, very reliable. I think the only thing that goes wrong is the distributor unit. Our car has done 127,000 miles at that is the only thing I have changed in terms of the engine.

To increase the torque, you could go through the full s/steel exhaust system, a pipercross induction kit and you will have a decent engine.

One thing I would do is change the bushes and sports suspension.

Motobuild are the daddies when it comes to Rover tuning.

 

My everyday car is a 95 218sld.... yup, 1769 turbo diesel from a peugout..... damn reliable, mine is a 5dr, i'm 99.9% sure the hath's are all independent rear susp, so maybe the coupe has a beam...??

 

I had a 420 gsi turbo for 3 years mate (same engine minus the turbo!!) it had 120k miles when I got shut of it, and would still go like stink. One of the few cars I really miss, a proper "Q" car. The only major thing to go wrong was the turbo at 90k miles (£250 to sort it!).

i had a 220 turbo prior to the scoob, not bad cars imho, yes they have there niggles, they aint exactly the worlds best built cars!

the T-series isnt actually a bad engine, i didnt have no problems with the engine, mine did about 120k and still produced 217bhp on the rollers (was modded)

they are very cheap to buy now, so you do get alot for the money and there not bad looking cars.

parts are very cheap and easy available to get hold of as they share alot of the parts between the lesser models, plenty of them in the scrap yards now.

IIRC there were two 1.6s in the earlier cars - one which produced ~130bhp, fitted to the GSi and some others which was the Honda. There was another that produced ~112 or ~115bhp fitted to some lesser models, not sure if that was a Honda engine or a 'K'. Doesn't really effect the original question about the 2L though!
