View Full Version : Working with RAW files
Gutmann pug 09 December 2005, 11:40 Playing with the camera again last night and took a couple of raw pics. I assume I download them to my computer in the normal fashion and then need to convert them to viewable files in some way. What do I need to do this?
Cheers
Gary
Simon C 09 December 2005, 11:49 You need something like rawshooter http://www.pixmantec.com/ (I use esentails cos its free) or if you download the plugin Photoshop can read them as well.
Personally I use rawshooter and follow the workflow below
In Rawshooter:
Alter whitebalance and colour casting then convert to Tiff
In Photoshop
Remove unwanted artefacts like skin blemishes, people etc, crop the image etc then save as Jpeg
HTH
kbsub 09 December 2005, 12:30 You should have the software you got with the camera (Zoom Browser EX )there is a very good RAW converter in there (RAW Image Task ) Look under Edit Photo's = Process RAW images .
I have played with Rawshooter for months now and I always find the RAW'S look very dark and grainy , open them up in Elements and they look as they should , anyone else have this ??

Not noticed them being drak and grainy, but last night when I was editing a few shots I did notice that Rawshooter was diaplaying them, what looked like slighty muddy and dull when compaired to the Jpeg (I shoot raw +jpeg)
Might give Capture another go.

Yeah slighty muddy and dull , same as mine , they look the same when I open them up in PS CS2 as well , OK in Elements and the Canon software though
Simon C 10 December 2005, 12:04 Haven't tried opening raws in CS as I don't have the Nikon plug in......
Yet.
kbsub 10 December 2005, 12:08 My Jpeg's look the same in P.S. CS2
Simon C 10 December 2005, 12:12 Dunno whats up with your system then, my jpegs look fine but the raws don't. Everywhere I can on this system I have set it to use SRGB Adobe colour profile.
kbsub 10 December 2005, 12:47 Fixed the colour system in PS cs2 , jpegs look OK now , still get dark RAWS in RSE though :(

Are you changing the 'Appearance' from 'Flat'? :wonder:
kbsub 10 December 2005, 14:57 Are you changing the 'Appearance' from 'Flat'? :wonder:
I play around with that , doesnt seem to make much difference to my untrained eye ;)
CharlieWhiskey 10 December 2005, 17:24 It makes a world of difference!
I usually take Landscapes and they need to be in Outdoor Medium or Outdoor Strong before you start playing around with any other settings (apart from Colour Temp).
See which ones look best by changing it and looking at the histogram. Holding down the <Ctrl> key will show you any blown highlighs in Red and lost lowlights in Blue:thumb:
If I get a chance I will post a few examples up
kbsub 10 December 2005, 18:15 It makes a world of difference! Sorry I meant the Dull look in the the RAW files
Geezer 10 December 2005, 20:49 Haven't tried opening raws in CS as I don't have the Nikon plug in......

Simon, it's not a Nikon plugin, it's an Adobe one, Adobe Camera Raw, free from their website.
If you have installed Nikon View however, it will bugger up ACR, but those nice folks at Adobe have realised this and when you open your first NEF with CS, it tells you exactly what to do to get rid of Nikons crappy plugin. :D
Geezer
Simon C 10 December 2005, 21:52 Thats what I meant, the last time I used CS for RAW files I had a Fuji os that plugin need replacing with the 1 for Nikons.
Going to give Capture 4.2 another go and see if thats any better.
Dazza's-STi 11 December 2005, 00:33 rawshooter...top bit of sw.. free too
alistair 11 December 2005, 11:28 Always worth having the Microsofr RAW Thumbnail Viewer (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=d48e808e-b10d-4ce4-a141-5866fd4a3286&displaylang=en) too.
KiwiGTI 19 December 2005, 14:51 Personally I like Capture One from www.phaseone.com
Best RAW workflow software I have found.
Hoppy 19 December 2005, 20:56 Kiwi, have you tried Raw Shooter Essentials from www.pixmantec.com ? It's a free download, or the new version, Premium, is only $70USD or quite cheap. Actually, you can get Premium free fro 14 days, I think.
I mention it because it is apparently designed by the same (Danish?) fella that did Capture One and is claimed to be better. Be interested in your comments.
Richard.

I mainly use a Powerbook, no Mac version for Raw Shooter Essentials yet. Which is a bit weird really because everyone in the industry uses Macs.
Hoppy 19 December 2005, 23:43 Yes, everybody in professional reprographics uses Macs, I agree. And they will fight to the death to keep them  But the other 95% of the world uses PCs and just doesn't get the Mac thing. I'm on the fence :D
Richard.
Simon C 19 December 2005, 23:48 And some of us love macs but don't own 1, instead I have a PC based system, running a stripped out version of XP pro with a mac desktop and feel about it :D
CharlieWhiskey 20 December 2005, 01:33 I've just got RawShooter Premium 2006 (http://esd.element5.com/product.html?productid=545270) as it's on offer for Christmas :)

Total cost (including Danish 25% VAT:eek::cuckoo: ) is £59-50:thumb:
