View Full Version : Techie question on aspect ratio's
Simon C 17 November 2005, 12:13 Does anyone know the aspect ratio of a good F1.8 50mm or 28mm please?
I've got a couple of lenses 1, is a macro (which wasn't said at teh time I bought it) and another lens with macro capabilities. The 1 with macro capabilities has a aspect ratio of 1:5.
Could this be used as a normal prime lens?
My old canon 50mm prime (manual) has distances marked as about 1foot to 16 foot then infinity. The new lenses have distances up to 5 feet then infinity.
The lenses in question are
Sigma 50mm F2.8 ex dg Macro
Sigma 28mm F1.8 ex dg (macro)
Cheers
Simon
IWatkins 17 November 2005, 13:34 Do you really mean aspect ratio ? Or a measure of magnification ? I'm guessing the later.
E.g. a true macro lens has a magnification of at least 1:1, i.e. the image projected onto the sensor/film is lifesize. E.g. if a coin is 1 cm across, the image from this lens (at closest focusing distance) is actually 1cm across once it reaches the sensor if you measured the projected image.
So, the Sigma 50mm lens you have has a minimum focusing distance of 18.9cm. At this distance the images being projected onto sensor/film is 1:1, i.e. lifesize.
The Sigma 28mm has a minimum focusing distance of 20cm but only a ratio of 1:2.9, so not really a macro lens, it can just focus close (and that seems good enough for Sigma to call it a macro lens).

Simon C 17 November 2005, 14:06 Thanks for that Ian, that has atleast put my mind 1/2 at rest. Suppose the next stage is to try it out at teh gig and look at the resulting image.
I wanted a 50mm prime F1.8 but they are like finding rocking horse poo at teh moment, the 28mm was the closest I could get my hands on in the time allowed.

http://www.warehouseexpress.com/ no good? You should be able to get the Canon 50mm f1.8 of f1.4 from them for next day delivery.

Apologies Simon, you mentioned Canon in your initial post and I assumed you were still with Canon.

Simon C 17 November 2005, 18:53 I am for film :D Just that the camera is older then me!! So I can't use any of the modern Canon lenses, so wasn't tied into a system (only have the 1 prime lens here, the rest are still at my parents house). I was impressed with my mates D1x which is why I went Nikon and I didn't like the feel of the 300D.

Something of an unfair comparison! If you'd compared a Nikon D70 with a Canon EOS 1D MkII I'm sure you'd have ended up with a Canon (albeit a 350D)
Simon C 18 November 2005, 17:43 It wasn't, yes my mates D1x impressed me, but the 2 I did a comparison were the D70s and the 300D, so quite equal.
Still 2 months and I'll be the proud owner of a D200 assuming it meets what I want :D
STi-Frenchie 19 November 2005, 01:12 Simon, please don't let the "digital age" lead you into thinking that you can't take great pictures with your Canon and 50mm lens - you certainly can! How did we oldies do it before autofocus and digital came along? It isn't that difficult.
Simon C 19 November 2005, 02:44 I'm not, the Canon will be coming to the next gig I go too. Just didn't have time to source the film for this 1. The Canon may be over 29 years old, it still takes better bics than I do.

Wrong my friend! The camera doesn't take pictures, it's the photographer behind it that does :) You'll do great, no worries!
Simon C 19 November 2005, 03:14 You haven't seen the lot from tonight :D Errrrrr not good. Its quite distracting when all you want to do is bend someone over the bass can :norty:
Oh ant put up with obnoxious pro's who stand in the way of fans and do so for the entire set. I just did the cheeky thing, and ducked inder the cordon, no one challenged me, but with an SLR I looked like 1 of them :D, but didn't act like it.
