Ok as im sure you are all aware I am MR thicky when it comes to tech mology.... :D

Having splashed out on a Canon 350D yesterday I now need a lens or two.

On purchasing a lens from an internet site / mag can I assume that if it says Canon fitment it will fit my camera without any additional parts? Is there anything particular I need to look for? AF / MF / EOS etc etc.

The fact is I ordered a lens last night on-line, sigma something or another and it said Canon EOS fit, just realised I have no idea if thats gonna fit my 350D, what a thicket :D

I also keep seeing rings for sale, are they convertors to fit a lens made for a Nikon to a Canon etc?

Help please.

I'm not a Canon user (Nikon) but yes most new lenses should work fine. Probably need to be carefull if buying second hand as if the lens is old it may not communicate with the body properly & you may loose AF or even metering.

Don't be tight on lenses, most of the quality you can produce from DSLR's comes from the sensor or the lens...

I'm pretty sure that when you order the lens and specify a canon fit that it will fit your 350D. When I order lenses (and don't order the worng 1  ) for my Nikon, I just specify its for a Nikon and it fits. Don't think you will have a problem.

Yes, your new lens will fit :D

The rings you keep seeing for sale, may be ring flashs :D another confusion, have you got an example?

EF or EF-S compatibility is what you need to look for. You can buy adaptors to allow other lenses to fit, but you lose auto functions, such as exposure and focus.

Thanks for the replies.

Rang the supplier to make sure it was going to be ok as its secondhand so worth being 100% sure.

He wasnt convinced either so kindly tried it on a 350D for me. It worked fine. Its a cheap Sigma 70-300mm so very much an entry level jobby, but it will be ok until I can afford better.

He told me always to check when buying old lens's especially with the 350D as it has diff motors or something so things like the AF may not work sometimes.

Anyway it should arrive in the next day or two and I can give it a test run.

Cheers

Gary, you are ok buying both EF or EF-S lenses with the 350D, but just be aware that the EF-S ones are designed specifically for the smaller sensor and they 'stick out more at the back' so they will ONLY fit the EOS 300, 350 or 20D just in case you upgrade in the future.

Canon lenses will obviously work best, but any newish lens from Sigma/Tamron which comes in Canon EF fitting should be OK with your camera. If in doubt, check. Sounds like you had a good source if they checked it for you :thumb: where was it?

There are issues with older lenses, such as my old Sigma 28-210, so be careful if buying secondhand or lenses off eBay. Note that older, prehistoric, Canon FD lenses will NOT fit!

Good luck with your new toy and be sure to post up some piccies soon! :D
