Got home last night to cold house and cold water, found the boiler had gone out, done all the usual checks and tried re-lighting but no joy, popped down to wickes and bought a new thermo coupling and fitted that but still no joy, could the new thermo coupling be faulty I wonder  I will try another new one tonight but not holding out much hope...any ideas??

Gas valve?

When mine did the same, it was that.

I assume you can do, and have tried, a manual light, (taper etc?).

I was quoted £80 for a new gas valve. While the old one was off, I took it to bits, and the only bit I could see that could go wrong was a solenoid. I tested it, and it was dead.

I was able to source a new solenoid to put in the old valve for £10 +VAT!!

What maker and model? separate timer switch? There is a particular order to the light up of a gas boiler.

Roughly: Timer moves to on, room & tank sensors demand heat, central heating pump comes on, boiler fan comes on, pilot ignites, main gas switched on.

Check in that order.

Is it a pressured sytem,If so you may have a small leak that has caused the pressure to drop, below the pressure the system needs to allow you to start the pilot.
Just guessing.

More detail is needed on your boiler and system or as above we are guessing.

Hi guys,

Have tried all the above, its a non pressurised system, stelrad group wlx 40 40'000 btu boiler. Spoke to the plumbing shop whilst buying a second thermo coupling and they said gas valve, spoke to my plumber and he said gas valve as its a honeywell gas valve and apparantly these are prone to failing in this way.

I have also tried a manual light and it will light but goes out as soon as you release pressure from the lighting button so its now a case of getting it replace on saturday morning as I am not qualified to do this job (not corgi reg) and unable to set the gas pressure up etc.

Thanks for your help
