how many shots you can get on a memory card?

For example if I went and bought a 7mp Sony and a 256mb card, at max res how many shots would that hold? (For example:))

I saw a table somewhere but it didn't go to 7mp

thanks all!

I'd say about 130 - 140 tops. I have a 3mp Sony and a 512mb stick. At max res that holds 311. Thats for jpg btw, it really depends on what format your shooting in, RAW files take up a hell of a lot more space that jpgs.

I'd have thought less than that - 100 or so.

It's not an exact science as JPEG's are compressed - the amount of compression depends on what the pictures are of & how much compression can be applied to the image.

looking at a review of the Sony P200, 7Mp, all the max res fine detail sample pictures are between 2.7 and 3.4Mb in size.

so a 256Mb card you would get between 75 and 94 pics

Doesn't the camera tell you? It must.

Somewhere you will find a number on the LCD panel which which tell you exactly how many pictures you've got memory space remaining for, at whatever JPEG setting you have at the time with the card installed. For different card sizes, just double up.

There's a chart here, doesn't go down to 256 but I suppose you could half the 512 to calculate;

editted to say;
those figures seem a bit low

Average file size using camera's "high-resolution" JPEG mode. The actual number of images per card will vary and depends on the camera model and complexity of the scene being photographed.

The 6MP one looks about right for a Canon 300D in 'Large' JPEG mode :thumb:

6 Large for me shows about 270 odd on a blank 1 GB card but I usually get 350-400 so that number is a bit low for me (D70)

Sandisk numbers appear a bit more realistic:

My fuji goes to 6M

On a 256MB xD card it estimates 173 pics at 6 megapixels.
On a 512 card, 347 pics at 6 mp
On 256 card, 37 pics in RAW (2816 x 2120)

However, the table shows 'the standard number of available frames for a new xD card formatted on the camera....
...because the amount of data recorded varies depending on the subject.... consequently the actual number of available frames may be more or less....'

According to the book (P200), at 7MP resolution (fine) you should get an average of 67 images on a 256MB stick, 137 images on a 512MB stick.

As stated above, it does depend somewhat on the image - as the images are stored as jpegs, anything of mainly one colour (eg flash images with a dark background or night shots) take up less space.

For info, I've currently got a full 512MB stick with 162 images (I think they're all at 7MP).
