I have been looking at various tool sets mainly socket sets and spanners etc for myself. The stuff I am looking at is not expensive therefore I know it will not need to be finest quality, it is not used every day therefore cheep and cheerful will do.

Some tools claim to be carbon-steel, others are Chrome Vanadium.... Are either of these materials an important factor or maybe I should be asking, should either of these materials be an influencing factor in terms of strength and durability of the items?

I know from reading the Carbon steel is the more brittle of the two, but unless I was battering the hell out of them I doubt this would matter?

I've recently seen tests run on both socket sets and spanner sets. Each time Halfords own brand stuff came out really well on both price and durability.

Obviously, not "Snap-on" quality, but good enough for the home mechanic.

DON'T buy cheapo stuff.........I did in France, and my socket set has two broken sockets, a knackered ratchet handle, and a bent tommy bar, already. Been used three times:eek:

OK, I'll be the first to mention it.....

Halfords Professional stuff is very good value for money (if you can stand going into a shop to buy it)
...spanners
...ratchet spanners..fantastic, everyone should have them ;)
...socket sets
...torque wrenches
etc etc

fourth and final fianl mention, the halfords profession stuff is very good quality. Cheap socket sets are a no no, they just cant cut it when being used on anything remotely tight, lost count of the sockets that I have broke with faulty ratchets etc.

My missus thought she was being nice today when she came home with B&Q screwdriver set, i had to let her down gently & tell her they are sh!te.

I have a full snap on set (ie everything) lying in the garage

If you dont want Mac or Snap on, i would also advise on the halfords, i have a few filter wrenchs off that quality & they do not bad when used (about 5 years ago ;) )
