View Full Version : Best garage door opener for double "barn" doors

Any ideas, as most openers seem to be for up & over garage doors.
I have a Barn/garage with large quite heavy swing doors & would like to get em electric. Will obviously need 2 motors (1 for each door) and it would be good if they opened together or independantly (sometimes a car is parked infront of one of the doors so only need to open 1 "side"
One door has bolts at top & bottom, the other just a catch that locks when its closed, guess all this would have to go, so would a kit include something that when the doors close they are secure??

Thanks

What about trying to adapt Gate Openers (for iron gates), you usually have one opener for each gate so it might be possible to work them independantly.

Any ideas where I can go to get the openers?

Cheers

Ro,

There is an adapter kit for garage door operators that would operate side hung garage doors (aptly called a 'barn door conversion' kit ;) ).

The good thing about using the Barn Door conversion on a normal garage door operator, is that there is no strain put on the motor.

If you need any further advice, give me a call on 01702 299939

PS. seeing if I can find a diagram of the barn door conversion on my laptop/pc

Not that helpful, BUT. In this pic, you can see one of the 'barn door conversion' arms attached to the side hung garage door.

I do have a short film clip showing the doors in operation, but do not know where/how to upload vid clips ;)

You can use the barn door conversion with most garage door operators (the cheap ones from B&Q would be fine, but wouldn't recommend them for any other use ;) ), if you can follow written instuction, and can use a tape measure and pencil, you should be okay.

You may have problems sourcing one, if you do, let me know, I can get them next day ;).

And you should look at a cost of £100 - £140 depending on which kit you can get hold of.
