I've got a Nikon D100 and found that the buffering is extremely slow on RAW mode, even with a decent memory card.

I'm considering changing to a new D70s of similar spec, but can anyone tell me if they've found the the D70s to process any faster than a D100 when shooting on RAW?

I'm also tempted by the D200 due out soon, though this is likely to be more pricey at £1300 - £1400 or so.

Cheers,

Jon

The buffer on the D70 is 4 shots in RAW, don't know about the D100 or D70s. You get more shots though, as it is writing to the card before the buffer fills (but only one or two more). The lockout time is very small, I have found that the buffer emoties quite quickly once you stop shooting (and let's face it, who reels of 20 odd shots in a row?)

The D200 is 'only' £1199 at Warehouseepress.com, and as you are already tied into Nikon (I assume), that's dirt cheap for the spec, so if you can stretch to it.......................

Jon, I have the D70s and the buffer only allows 4 shots in raw and your looking at 2 - 3 seconds (per image)for the camera to write it to a card a full buffer takes about 10 - 12 seconds roughly to empty fully to the card

Its not amasingly fast, but does what I want most of the time and not that different to a D100. However the D200 is a different beast, and Warehouse Express have it on their website at £1200. I'm waiting for the new year to come and see what prices are being banded about then, I expect the street price to be nearer the £1000 mark come Jan - Feb.

My D70s has a few niggles for me and they are listed below

Not designed for a vert grip (work around in progress)
No external switch to go from Single focus to Continious.

If the D70s was 8mp with the above included I wouldn't even be looking at the D200, however it isn't so I am.

I would also think that the write times of the D70s v D100 would be slightly slower for the D70s, but never having used a D100, its only my thoughts, based on what Nikon have said to me when I asked them questions, and looking through the FAQ on their customer support site.

Also remember that the D70 models have a new type of buffer and it doesn't have to be empty before shooting more, you only need the space for the next shot.

This was my primary reason for buying over the Canon.
