Hi All

I've got 50 sq yrds of antique oak block flooring to lay in my mum's lounge. I guess it'll be best to get a pro to do a decent job of laying it, sanding and polishing, but I'll do the prep work myself. It has got the old adhesive (black tar type stuff) stuck the base and the edges - obviously I've got to get it off the edges so the tongue and groove mates properly, but do I need to get it off the bottom too or will the new tar stick to the old as well as it would naked wood? Will it matter that the old tar is pretty uneven? (most of it was obviously left on whatever it was last stuck to!)

Any other tips or recommendations of companies to do the laying (North East Wales)?

Cheers,

Ben

We did our hall and dining room with recovered block flooring.

We scraped all the old tar off (what a nasty, dusty, messy, horrible, timeconsuming job!), but didn't use tar to stick them down. We used rapidset floor tile adhesive, and it's done well, there are only an odd few blocks that sound loose (if you can ever be bothered to go round tapping - that's the only way to notice).

We hired a big sander and an edging sander for a day, and finished it with some floor varnish.

It wasn't a difficult job - we had the laying done in a weekend.

HTH.

John.
