It's finally let go at castle combe today!!

Ok I had been running it at 1.4 bar all day but is this the problem??

Ok I had done 132miles on the track but is this the problem??

Anyway, after a large sideways at Quarry there seemed to be a lot if smoke from behind put it down to tyre smoke...but once I was back down the start/finish straight something didn't seem right...slight loss of power at about 7500rpm.Came in on the next lap with a feckin diesel!!!! sounds like the big ends to me??

Right so where did we get to with this type of faliure..oil surge..detonation..????

All you guys Scott/Craig/Neil etc etc how are you getting on???

I can see the light at the end of the tunnel but I just need to know which tunnel to take...

Sheesh, sorry to hear that mate, I know how you feel . At least I had a warranty though.
Is this the first UNICHIP failure?
Please keep us informed Jon. My hope is that surge played a part in yours which is why I've just fitted poo-loads of gauges into my car.
I'm sure PS will be thorough in their investigations. Unichip was going to be my next mod, and I'm still planning to go ahead.

First UNICHIP maybe?? but I don't think thats the cause...but who knows??

Have you got a gauge that tells you when youv'e got oil surge??

I think it was the new WILWOOD 6POT brakes that allowed me to stay out for so long

Don't know the reason - probably never will. "one of those things".

May be back soon - a few weeks maybe - little worried 'cos it will be running more than 1.4.

Seems to be happening to a fair few......

 

if you have got a gauge that is telling you that you have got oil surge (oil presure gauge for gawds sake LOL) then you are not takling the problem are you?

If you are getting oil surge then you need to stop it, there's no point looking at a gauge and saying oh, oil surge, thats nice

You will also be getting surge (if you are) at exactly the point you wont be looking at the gauges, like under heavy braking and hard cornering.

If you want a warning for oil surge you are better off with a high presure oil warning light that trigers at 25psi, the standard 4psi switches are useless.

Actually John not even 4 psi, Subaru oil pressure warning switches are set to 2.1 psi, considering the cars have 6 bar of oil pressure normally not a lot of use IMHO, by the time it comes on the engine is well b******d.

is it possible to change this switch to one with a much lower (and thus salvageable, sp?) threshold?

sunilp, i think you mean much higher threshold, ie higher presure.

I dont see why not. I would think someone like Firefox or Bob has already done this.

You can buy these switches with various threads so unless packaging is a problem i cant see why it isnt an easy swap.

Maybe bob or Jay has the details or can sell you one.

 

Could the boxer design of the engine cause a problem?.

Say for example you keep on flooring it round a roundabout .
Anything loose in the car ends up flying to the outside and stays there (especially passengers ),so will the oil that is feeding the head on the passenger side be able to drain back to the sump? - or will it be trapped and thus lower the level in the sump maybe leading to oil surge?

So is it the chip or an inherent problem with the Scooby engine ? Might PE's remap be as good as the Unichip after all ? Was Mr Power correct in his assumptions ?

Anybody know what mods can you have done (practically) to minimize oil surge? Does the scoob have a baffled sump? If not any idea how much this would cost/where to get done etc.?

Question: when you talk about 1.4 bar, do you mean peak or hold ?

I was under the impression (technical term) that the turbo on the UK spec was only efficiënt up to 1.2 bar ?

sorry to hear about your engine - I'm not nervous as I will being going to Castle Combe in two weeks time, AND I am running up to 1.4 bar max....

....time to turn the boost down methinks!

interesting question - did anyone read the article (Autocar?) recently about Per Eklunds 750bhp SAAB. He said he used to run a Scoob for the Autocross, but he said that with the Scoob his engine builder had to work 24hours a day to keep him on the track. He said that with the Saab he is getting more power AND his engine builder can go on holiday now.

He is running 3.4 bar (absolute) so is pushing the limits more than we are - but still an indicator of ultimate strength.

By the way - his car does 0-100kph in 2.4 secs!

Hi dude... I seem to recall that Jon has an STI 3 with at least a VF23 turbo... so it is unlikely to have the same boost limitations as a UK car.

Hello Peeps,
Just thought I would let you know that APEXi and GReddy both do oil pressure gauges that have built in warning thresh-holds (owner set) that can be connected to a buzzer as well as a light. I have one of these in my car (connected to a buzzer loud enough to hear over a crash helmet, along with EGT, Oil temp and boost prssure) and they look good as well as serving a purpose.

They also have the added bonus of peak memory recall. If anyone wants to see what they look like, drop me a line and I will e-mail you a photo.

Just checked my peak memory on my GREEDY boost gauge...BUGGER 1.7BAR didn't see the warning light just the intergrale in front!!

So much for the Apexi boost controller,so maybe I have a holed piston??

Mike will definatly get them wired in to some sort of alarm when it's sorted...

JON, You have my utmost sympathy with the demise of your loved one.

Whilst the Big end on mine went on the queens highway and not the track, the results are the same

This was 8 weeks ago.

Right now, my friendly dealer is busy fitting my very nice, clean replacement STi IV engine. Apparently, it's done very very few miles (5,000?) and is very clean indeed. Getting this engine has been one hell of an uphill struggle. This engine is in fact the third to be delivered with the first two ! being WRX engines and not STi, as promised.

The world is full of sharks and im grateful that Pete Croney kept on trying until we finally found an engine.

With luck, i shall be on the road again and it can't come soon enough, being without my Impreza, driving the last 6000 miles in a 1.3 fiesta whilst seeing scoobies burbling past has been one of life's nightmares.

JON, Be strong and try to 'forget' your baby, not doing this will drive you to tears.

I have just fitted several gauges to keep an eye on things now my warranty is up, and will soon have a new sump that should help the battle against the dreaded surge, if that's where one of the Scooby weaknesses really lies.
Just waiting for a warning light/buzzer for my oil pressure as well.
