Looking for a little advice. At the minute I have a Focus RS which will be up for sale in the next week or so, I am in a bit of a dilemma as what to get next!

Of course theres the typical Scooby vs Evo...

Cars I have looked at/thought of so far, any of your inputs if you have owned or driven any of the cars would be appreciated!

Scooby 04-05 STI - Insurance is too much so thats pretty much out of the window, the WRX is too slow.

Evo 8 - Surprisingly a lot cheaper to insure than a scooby STI and probably the most appealing cars from all on this lists, would be an FQ300. Only thing that puts me off is the 4500 servicing schedule.

BMW M Coupe - Cheaper to insure than the Evo, in fact the cheapest from this list. Getting a little old now but hold there prices well. BMW servicing pricing though?!

They are the main cars, so its really between the evo and the beemer, but I also keep looking at other cars:

Lotus Elise S2
Alfa Romeo 147 GTA
Honda S2000
Escort Cosworth
Nissan 350Z
Clio V6

The problem with these cars is they are all expensive cars to insure but dont have the pace of the evo or beemer!

Any thoughts, opinions?

Although the BM may cost more to run, but I guess it will lose less money over the course of a few years making it pretty cost effective against the rice mobiles.

Ben, have you thought of the standard WRX with the free PPP ?

Maybe slightly over your budget, but the PPP takes the WRX up to 260BHP, but is still cheaper to insure than the STi.

And are you sure that the standard WRX is definitely too slow for you ?

The reason I say this is that I`ve driven a FFRS, and (assuming yours is standard) I felt that it was slower than a new model WRX. Granted, in a straight line there`s probably not much in them, but the WRX handles better, has a lower centre of gravity, and, as such, is more composed at higher speeds on Britain`s not-so-great road surfaces.

All this is IMHO of course, but don`t write-off the WRX, as it may be just what you`re looking for (especially with PPP).

The BM does seem to make a lot of sense, but there quite old cars now, would be looking at something like a 99 model with around 50-60k on the clock.

Skylines are a bit lardy, unless it was an R34 GTR lol, maybe in a few years time.

The WRX, I have not driven one, but I was not totally blown away by the STI I test drove last week so I can only see the WRX as being dissapointing, maybe worth a test drive though.

S2000 is a very nice car but they are just as much as the evo to insure so its sort of a no brainer.

 

wrx ppp can be picked up 6 month old for that money. its a performance bargain. i cant see you getting much better performance than that in a car that new.

Agree with Dexter & C2. I just bought a WRX300 with PPP fitted as standard. Paid £19,000 new, the standard PPP means cheaper insurance as it isn't classed as modified by my insurers, 0-60 in 4.8 and for me it was a choice between this car NEW or 5 year OLD M3 with 50,000+ miles on the clock. Okay the M3 is in a different league above 100 mph but with all the speed cameras on the motorways around here - who cares? Test drove a 350Z and it felt like it was falling apart. The cars on your list suggest performance is your main concern, not number of seats, space for the luggage etc. I agree a PPP'd WRX is a performance bargain.

Fair enough, but I would imagine that the depreciation on a wrx will be pretty intense.....

 

I have had a better look at WRX's and they just dont do it for me.

Integra DC5 is a fantastic car, but nobody will touch them with insurance unless your prepared silly money, which isnt really worth it for 220bhp.

The M5 is an interesting one, within my budget it would have to be a high miler though. But I suppose on a 4.0 litre engine 80-90k miles is nothing.

I believe the used car market isn`t up to much at all at the moment, so I think that most of the cars on Ben`s list will depreciate at a fair rate.

Out of the cars you mention i'd buy the S2000, because its a good all round sports car. It will depreciate alot less, it will be utterly reliable, its servicing is very cheap in comparison to say an Evo, its mpg is better than most, the girls love it do they love an Evo ?

Within a 12 month period it will cost u alot less, it is no where near as fast but you have to rely on skill rather than nannying electronics to make progress. However if you are after the fastest A-B car you can get then the FQ300 is going to be the one. Just don't add up how much it actually cost you when you change it for something else........but then you only live once!

 

No, quicker to 60 maybe but only because of the number of gear changes. The STi is by far the better bet, its also lower down the tuning scale so you can add more on as required.

I would be tempted by an M3 for that money I think, either that or a nice tommi mak EVO6.

On the other hand you could go for something like a VX220 turbo or maybe an early Exige?

Fabioso, I think that pretty much sums it up about the evo. It's just frustating that the S2000 only costs £5 less than the evo to insure for the year lol. I went to go test drive an S2000 at the local dealer on friday but they did not have any in so I am on the lookout for some local.

Hi Gary, I remember you from the PGAC, do you still have the 205? I was initially after an evo 6 TME/7 RSII because you can pick up a real bargain at the minute but they are so much more expensive to insure than an evo 8.

My age causes the problems with insurance, surely they should realise after spending 17k on a car I am not going to drive it like a **** and wipe myself out into the nearest lamp post.

As for the Elise/VX220, very tempting, but with summer nearly over am I better waiting for summer next year? Can't see them being much fun in the winter.

Get ya butt over to south wales and take my evo 7 FQ300 off me mate.. Its obsessively looked after and is mint, you will love it... I promise, and not much else will come close either.. the evo 8's are heavier and thus slower You can have it for 17K mate + a nice spec on her and great insurance quotes, cos its a standard model therefore its not deemed modified in their eyes which will be great for you and the insurance company especially at your age..

Oh yeh.. its still got warrenty left too for piece of mind... This covers anything from stone chips to engine etc which is good..

 

You mentioned the V6 Clio. I have driven both the phase 1 and 2 V6's. One of my mates has owned both. The Phase 1 is awful, it's slow and handles like ****. The phase 2 is better, nicer looking car, faster and handles slightly better, but you have to be a very good driver to get the most out of these cars. They are also very unreliable, my mate has gone through several gearboxes and had various other problems with his. I would just avoid them. Although they have got one thing going for them they are real head turners, everyone can't help but stare. He swapped his for an E46 M3 in the end.

 

Save up and get the insurance on the STi Sorry i know that probably doesnt help. lol

 

The Mazda RX-8 is better, not so common as an evo, more fun to drive and cheaper to run! forget the family tie. safer to leave than evo, attracts less jealous types, that just get fun out of damaging our cars. Serious now take one out for a test drive you know it makes sense. I don't think you will be dissapointed.

 

TVR? Insurance is usually cheaper than a WRX...

 

My next door neighbour has a guest staying with him who has a Clio V6 (ver2), it is parked outside and is that nice blue colour. Have to say it looks amazing, really purposefull.
