Answers on a postcard

OK, I mean a car for £3k ish - have sold both our performance cars, to get a sensible(ish) MPV, big estate with some power, and also a cheapish runaround for me to go to and from work in.

306 Gti-6 is an idea, maybe a 106 Gti, any other suggestions?

Must be reliable, quick, nice looking.....

For that money I'd be looking at a Eunos, not sure about 'quick' though but it is a hell of a lot of fun

Civic VTi, Prelude 2.2 VTEC, or if you're willing to lose some practicality, a well kept CRX VTEC?

I've still got a craving for a Miami blue 1.9 205 gti.

Just watched some repeat of a clarkson thing on sky all about fast hatches (escort cossies and the likes). He was thrashing on some roads in North Yorks and said you could bring any car whether it be a Lambo; Ferrari; Porsche and this would pretty much leave them for dead on those particular stretches.

Sounds tempting................

Dunno, but it would probably involve a decent hotel room and a high-class hooker

Seriously, I'd second what SJ says

Our 1.8iS MX5 was £3500, slightly above normal but it's an in demand colour, and included a body coloured hardtop.

If you choose to go the 1.9GTi route, don't get a Miami or Sorrento one, everyone will think you're gay

Howabout a toyota starlet gt turbo? I had one before my scoob. Rapid for a 1.3 (0-60 in 6.7 secs) 133bhp, good on fuel, bags of torque, highly reliable and tunable (only available in imports, but have higher spec e.g. aircon etc.) As its FWD, handling isnt great, but slap on coilovers and better brakes and youre laughing all the way, go for 94/95 model, they look nicer or you can even go for the last models 'glanzas' - very nice but well over 3k: high demand for them. Check out www.toyotagtturbo.com, my old white one should be on there.

Oh and theres also the MAZDA FAMILIA 323 turbo available in 1.8 and 2.0 l turbos, 4wd too I think. Although not as reliable as the starlet but VERY VERY tunable indeed!! see autotrader for this.

Funny you should say that. Just today I have put an all round set of Pads & Discs on £300 worth of really tidy '90H 323 GTi. Looking under it I was thinking what a great track day car one would make. There are plenty of go faster bits available (MX-5 motor), and they've got adjustable geometry front & rear. You could do a Gary (Gutmann Pug) and make some numpties in expensive tackle look daft

I was specifically talking about the turbo versions, only availabe in Jap spec. The gtis are supposed to be fast as well 150-170 bhpish? But apparently, with the turbos just a straight through exhaust gives 15-20 hp gain and so on! im not sure if that is true, just what Ive been told. And the turvos have quite a high spec too.
