After 2 years off a bike i can now return to the fold, whats its gonna be i,ve always yearned for a R1 but you can get a blade for cheaper.
Your advices and opinions would be much appreciated.
Plus i've got an 1986 fzr 1000 genesis that runs and is fairly tidy any idea of its value?

Cheers
Chris

I'm guessing your FZR could be worth about £1500, if you can get that for it, plus your £4000, if you shop around you should be able to take your pick of all the top litre sport's bike's upto 2002/3. As for choice there all pretty much the same performance wise, if you're only using it on the road, the Blade is probably slightly more user friendly and practical (it's got a massive storage space under the seat), i think it all boil's down to which one you prefer the look of really, just one thing, if your NCB has lapsed for 2 year's the insurance companie's won't be too keen to give you a reasonable quote.

Try MCE for insurance at www.insuremce.com (http://www.insuremce.com) there normally quite cheap.

Jeez, wilkoca, two hundred quid on an R1. You're a retired vicar living in Scotland?

Why has it been two years off? You'll be VERY rusty. Take it VERY easy. An R1 will be wasted on you, as it would on me and 99% of bikers generally. But we know the score. It's a wicked bike, great looks, big respect etc. Thing is, do you reeely, honestly want to jump straight on to the ultimate race bike?

There are some cracking street bikes that will give race reps a run for their money, are easier to live with... God I'm getting old. Where's me pipe and slippers.

Anyroad all I'm saying is times have changed. There's speed cameras everywhere. Motorways are a no go. The roads are jam packed with ignorant, sightless and careless nobheads who shouldn't be out in public let alone behind the wheel.

So you'll be planning on trackdays, trips to Europe, full leathers, boots gloves, helmet to go with the bike?

Every evening I wish I had me old FireBlade lurking in the garage waiting for me to take it out for a spanking. And every morning I jump onto me nice big comfortable Fazer Thou, thanking my lucky stars I don't have to hunch on top of a twitchy, super lightweight road rocket, light the fuse and fire it into the next traffic queue.

Screwd.

Yep £200

32 living in Caterham, the fact im an insurance broker helps tho:)
Been off the road for 2 years due to a move of house, purchase of a STI and not having the time to mot and sort the FZR.

Always dreamt of a R1 i know its not practical but what the hell bikes have been my sole means of transport for 12 years until i bought the car so this is just a plaything.
And yes i know its a beast and it will be treated with the upmost respect.
Got the full dianese kit but i think i will invest in a new lid the shoes 3 or 4 years old.

Just got to tell the missus now:nono:

Actually i think the safest option will be just to buy it am hide it in the garage

LOL :)

Aha. The truth will out; a broker huh! Can I have a nice cheapo policy please? :) I'm very safe, nothing like I've been telling everyone all these years. Honest!

The FZR (as you know) is a fairly stonking bike but the R1 will be a surgical tool compared to a club hammer. I'd love one but I just don't have the restraint for day in day out riding. One of the problems I had when I used to run the Blade as my "toy" bike was being rusty on the few occasions I took it out during the week (me not the bike!). I keep talking about going on trackdays and I keep not getting round to doing it. hey ho. Polish my skills on the daily slog I suppose...

Nice bike!

Just a comment on cans - the current MOT says that 'it is up to the tester to determine if it is too loud'. AS LONG AS it doesn't say 'not for road use' or something you should be fine ...

Enjoy!

Might be worth considering a 600 - R6 or GSXR6 ? the performance of these ( apart from very top end speed, which doesnt get used much ) will be more on par with the FZR - the handling will be much better though.

R1's are nice, but to be honest, most riders will only ever use about 75% max of its performance, so the R6 is just as good in 'real world' terms - also a bit cheaper to buy, run and insure.

When I bought my 748 I thought about getting a 1000, but the ones I tested werent any different in speed up to 100mph, and the handling was a lot worse ( they were a bit more comfortable though ).

Your FZR is worth about £1000 tops this time of year - thats if its pretty much mint and standard, may get a bit more part ex on it though.

LMAO at this thread, I just bought a 1998 R1 in Red & White as this was my preferred colour scheme.

I was gonna buy a later model and have it painted in the early colours until I read the Performance Bikes article where they do up a 1998 model and it's almost as quick as the latest.

It's got Ohlins rear and Ohlins springs in the forks, with an Akrapovic full titanium system and only 8,000 miles to boot.

Oh and I've had 4 years off bikes, I must say the first 2 weeks nearly made me sell it but I stuck with it and now think it's a bit slow so some tuning is next.

I also had a FZR1000 before but had sold it 4 years ago when I stopped riding. It was the EXUP version though and I had spent a few quid on it getting it how I wanted it. (Wiseco Big Bore, 0W01 Cams, Ported & Polished Head, Cut and Balanced Crank, Ohlins Rear and Springs front, 163 Ponies at the rear wheel, Torque to die for. Yummy)

So all the best and might see you on a track day ;-)

my 99 blade does it in just over 3 secs so performance bikes said.

Ive ridden a 2003 blade they are superb! the handling is awsome.

My mate owned a 2002 r1 till this year and he rated that very highly. Its all down to personal choice. Get down the dealer and test ride whatever they have. If they wont let you then go somewhere else!

I wouldnt buy a car without driving it but plenty buy bikes without riding them!!

Anyone who thinks these bikes are at all slow should get a mate to take them on the back.

Best ask them to nail it in a straight line. When you're not hanging onto the bars it feels A LOT different...
