I think I may have missed this.

I saw 45 Scoobies driving between Theale and Pangbourne on Sunday morning, and 5 had their front fogs on.

Surely this is too many to be down to user incompetence?

Has to be one of the most annoying things ever. (front fogs beaten into 2nd place by rear fogs though)

It seems to be the chav opinion that driving with fogs on is "cool" - yet another reason why I hate chavs!!

 

I would hardly refer to the front std lamps as fogs? They only just manage to put light in front of the spoiler lol! A couple of candles in their would do better

Get some PIAA's fitted and you can burn their retina's out then

 

But wired up correctly PIAA narrow beam 'driving' lights will only come on with main beam.

The issue is with peeps deliberately putting on wide beam 'foglights' that are wired up to be used with the sidelights on a car.

It's annoying and looks stupid in one package!

I'm not a chav, however I sometimes drive with the fogs (front) on. I've yet to be convinced of the problem other then "it's anoying" (well, get a life then) and "they dazzle me in the rain" (really? More than dipped beam?). Comparing it to having the rear fogs on is a bit strange too, in my book.

Maybe I've missed the point though and am about to be set right...
Or maybe I've made the mistake of fanning the flames...

 

Totally agree that rear fogs on unnecessarily are a real PITA - especially at night, but I've yet to be blinded by front fogs; however annoying there use may be.

Surely the whole point of front fogs is that the top of the beam's cut off specifically to stop the whole blinding effect - either to the driver or oncoming traffic?

OK, it may be annoying, but I'd rather have someone come towards me at night with sidelights & fogs instead of just sidelights on. What the point of sidelights on at night on a moving car is I just don't know!

 

I believe driving with fog lights on (front or rear) when visibility is not impaired by fog to 100m or less is an endorsable offence.
It would have been a much better idea for Subaru to have fitted driving lights as standard rather than the generally useless front fogs.

The point is, there is a minimum height-off-the-ground for front lights. If you want lights LOWER than this, you need to either have:
- your main beams on (i.e. only used in absence of oncoming traffic anyway)
- visibility impaired by fog, in which case you can use fog lights.

It's irrelevant that fog lights have a beam that "cuts off" just below "dazzle height" - lower lights dazzle more, period.

 

I would have thought the OEM's were driving lights cos they are not up to being of in use in fog.

 

It's a £20 spot fine for mis-appropriate use of fog lights. I wish the cops would tackle that money cow rather than speed cameras.

'ru - simple question; why do you use the front fog lights when it's not foggy?? they do absolutely nothing other than annoy some other road users.

Impreza's are fitted with front fog lights as standard - NOT driving lights. They are no use in the fog or in conditions with perfect vision.

 

Well, at the moment they're switched off (as is the car, obviously - I'm still waiting for them to fit the hands-free PC kit) so I don't use them at all when driving. However...


1) In poor conditions (low light, raining, mist etc.) I believe lights should be used. It makes it easier for other road users to see you - other road users need all the help they can get it seems. The side lights are pretty poor, so hence using the front fogs. It never ceases to amaze me how many people don't use their lights (side, dipped, front fog whatever) unless it's pitch black.
2) Sometimes when I'm 'pressing on' I need more light on the car (for the same reasons as above). The front fogs are (in my book) a 'half way house' between the sidelights and the dipped beam.
3) I think it looks cool.
4) It annoys people who should have better things to worry about. This is similar to people getting annoyed at other's haircuts! wtf? lol.

Anyway, I agree that the police should pull people for stuff like this - and this includes bad lane discipline, use of indicators etc. Problem is, most officers I see driving (plod, not including traffic) can't drive properly anyway.

 

MatthewC - I'm not sure I understand what you mean about lower lights dazzling more? How so?

Do you mean if they're misaligned upwards, or because they'll get more reflection off the road surface?

as for 1) & 2) I use my dipped headlights or my PIAA spots. I've been in cars with fogs and the light is thrown so close to the car it's virtually useless when driving fast. I want light thrown further down the road in that situation.

I ASSUME that to make a lower light useful, it HAS to be angled upwards more. (All other things being equal...etc... ) There is usually a good reason for the regulations (although often they become outdated, and the law CAN be an ***.)

Digressing somewhat, another factor is the total power limit. This also seems a good regulation. However, it fails to account for the efficiency of lights - 100W can produce different brightness according to the technology used. The original regs would have just used an arbitrary limit based on what SEEMED to be enough light from the equipment common at the time. It's not the case that if EVERYONE had brighter lights the roads would be safer (main beams are a different issue.)

Er, I'm not sure 'all other drivers' do. And I don't really care. In a recent statistic I just made up, 10% of drivers got really wound up by people using front fog lights 'incorrectly' (oh no, boo hoo, he's breaking the law...). The other 90% thought that those 10% were a bit wierd and should maybe search for a life (clue, it's not up your @rse).

If one person doesn't pull out in front of me or whatever due to me showing some lights at the front then it's worth the trolling on here.

To be honest, where I am there's maybe one chance per year to use fog lights 'properly'. Front ones are, in my opinion, pretty useless in the fog and rear ones are only useful when there's no-one behind you. As soon as there is, then I switch mine off; they know you're there.

So, rather than waste my front ones I use them. I'll use them more now I know it winds muppets up so much.

Oh, just a question (I honestly don't know the answer) - why do you think that the front and rear lights have different switches? And that only the rear one brings up a warning on the dash?

It may be argued that these are not 'valid' reasons (in fact it probably has already, yawn) however they appear to be somewhat more valid than your reasons for getting so worked up!
