Hi

Love these pictures, any ideas where i can go to get some similar, live in the midlands, Bham and there arent too many RAF bases around here that im aware of. Is it luck of the draw when they fly?

Regards

Paul :)

It's Kemble Air Day this Sunday Paul, if you fancy a trip down south as far as Cirencester... should be a good day, and contemplating going myself.

http://www.kembleairday.com/

Failing that, hold on for the biggest military airshow in the world - IAT at RAF Fairford - next month: http://www.airtattoo.com/airtattoo/showcontent.asp

If you'd like to know where to go at Fairford, so that you can get right underneath the flightline (for minimal cost) then let me know... it's where I'll be! Probably not the safest location, but the best for photos!

Very interested in that bit of info - was thinking of going down there myself to get some good shots of the American heavy stuff, but am not familiar with the area and don't know where it's best to be for photography.

OK - if anyone's interested in being directly under the display line at RAF Fairford... literally right next to the airbase perimeter fence that is used as the flight-line, then look here:

Link to relevant Google map page (you can zoom in out and move around from here, to work out where it is): http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=fairford&ll=51.688308,-1.817894&spn=0.076835,0.169258&hl=en

Detail of where to go:

http://mitsubishi-fto.myby.co.uk/fairford.jpg

The top map shows an extract from the Google maps page, the darker square is then the area that is shown in OS detail beneath.

You want to go to the field that is shown as HERE! on the top map, and numbered 84 on the OS map. Entrance is at the tip of the V of the road to the left of the 84.

Access to this field is down the yellow road that leads vertically down to the tip of the V - sometimes there are 'Road Closed' signs along the access route but you can ignore them.

The farmer that owns the field at the tip of the V (the tip is actually an airbase crash gate) runs his field as a commercial venture over the RIAT weekend. Entry is £10 per person I think, and you park your car and sit in it (or whatever) tune into to RIAT radio for the commentary and insert ear-plugs! They provide eating, drinking and toilet facilities in the field as well.

As you can see from the OS map, the only thing between your camera lens and the taxi-ing aircraft is a wire fence, which is used as the display line (great for the Red Arrows!). Views of the static displays isn't so hot - as they (and the crowd) are on the opposite side of the main runway...

A Mig on full after-burner 50ft above your head is a sight and (more importantly) sound never to forget!

I'll be there - so look for the 100-400 white lens, and probably my Scoob!

Excellent - see you there on the Sunday (also with my Scoob and a 100-400L) :)

Two fields to the right, just to the south of the lake on the map, is where the two Migs crashed a few years ago.

I was stood by the crash gates at the time....

Not that it's potentially dangerous or anything!

Thanks for the kind words chaps! :)

Be prepared for serious info overload, www.warplane.co.uk has an excellent forum, you can find out anything you want to know about military planes on there, plus there are some stunning photos in the galleries! You do have to register (free) to view it though...it's worth it for the pics! :)

We've just got back from a weeks holiday in Lossiemouth, Scotland...at the end of the runway at RAF Lossiemouth! It's seriously awesome, I challenge anyone to go there and watch two GR4 Tornado take off on full afterburner, side by side  Pics to follow! :D

RAFWaddington is having an Airshow on the 2nd and 3rd of July, I've been a few times and it's very good, here's the website www.waddingtonairshow.co.uk

It's not as big as Fairford but all the usual suspects are there, Tornado GR4 and F3, Typhoon, Jaguar, Red Arrows etc, plus me and Sal

there's always Cosford (nr Telford IIRC) as well, which isn't too bad. Again, teh usual suspects will be there.

Or you could just go and work for BAE and see them day in day out for free:)

23rd July near me, we have a small air display @ wattisham airfield in suffolk. I think it will all be helicopters, but as they have quite a few Apaches based there, they will feature, so hope to get some good shots of 'em. Guessing a slightly slower shutter speed will help give an impression of speed on the rotors?

Cosford was last week :) I've got some pics but haven't resized them yet  :D

I reckon for the choppers you want to be down at around 1/125 or lower if you can hold it steady! :D

We'll be asking for a plane spotters forum on here next  :D

James, Elvington Airshow (http://www.elvington.org/) might be of interest to you. If anyone else wants to go I need a nobber to go with as mine is away that weekend at a stag do  ;)

Standing at the end of the runway at Lossiemouth as two Tornados take off is just about the most awesome thing I've ever experienced :D
