View Full Version : RIP Gus Scott, Tester and Racer.
Fluffmeister 10 June 2005, 22:37 http://www.iomonline.co.im/
Gus Scott killed today at the TT, it looks like a freak accident brought about by a Marshall crossing the track to tend to a rider who had pulled in.
Both the Marshall and Gus where killed, just after Rhencullen, he was flat out in 5th gear.
RIP Gus, have a beer with Ronnie when you see him.
Scott W 10 June 2005, 23:38 Blimey, and wasn't this year his first attempt at it because he'd always wanted to do it?
Sad news though :( RIP.
Pauleds2 11 June 2005, 00:03 Gus was a gent and a stunning rider. Another nightmare scenario. He would have wanted to go on the Island. He was Ronnie Smith's Best friend.
We will remember him always.
jjones 11 June 2005, 00:27 rip gus & ronnie :(

Joey; Dave Jeffries, 'Ronnie' Smith and now Gus Scott; Im lost for words. As a long time reader of Performance Bikes I felt that I knew Ronnie Smith and Gus Scott; I cant believe that Gus has died too.
Simon
I just heard the news this morning by text, can't believe 'hamster cheeks' is gone. :(
Sad for the marshall too, is it true he walked across the track?
I've met Ronnie and Gus a couple of times at Cadwell and at the TT, and from the PB road test videos i really felt i knew them both. Really funny and genuine guys.
:(
Very sad news indeed..
RIP
It should be banned racing around the streets on bikes its far to dangerous imho and every year leads to another death.
Very sad news :(

crofty 11 June 2005, 12:49 Sad news :(, got the fast bike video lost in france with Gus and Ronnie in it from a few years back, both top blokes, bet there having a great reunion!!

What complete Bollox:mad: Based on that premise, driving in towns should be banned too, coz a fcuking sight more people die doing that:(
Very sad new RIP:(

Yes it's dangerous, but if it was a nice safe knitting contest then nobody would enter. If it were possible to ask DJ, Joey, Ronnie or Gus what they thought - i'm sure they'd say 'we wouldn't have it any other way*'.
*Except maybe not having marshals who walk across the track, if that's indeed what happened.

I agree but look at the people that are losing their lives at this event - they are decent top notch riders. I've never understood the TT myself...and yes I am a rider.
I recently watched the PB videos again when they were shown on M&M - what a bloody waste of a nice bloke
:( :( :(
New To Scoob 12 June 2005, 02:18 RIP Gus :(
As has been already said, Gus, Ronnie, Joey etc probably would have not wanted to go in any other way.
John.
Sbradley 12 June 2005, 10:51 Gus, Ronnie, DJ and many others I've known over the years - some more famous, some less so. RIP to them all :(
But let's not talk bollocks about "would not wanted to go in any other way" though, please. While there are certainly worse ways to go there are certainly better ways as well. As an ex TT racer I was always prepared for the risk but I know for a fact that if I had the choice of dying peacefully in my sleep at 90 or, even better, expiring in mid shag (preferably at or immediately post climax) or hitting the wall at Kate's Cottage then I know which I'd have plumped for...
And let's not talk about banning the TT either. Let's just look at pushing the organisers into improving marshalling because that would save probably half the lives lost each year. Gus is just another example - DJ shouldn't have had that accident either if marshalling had been competent...
SB
PS I agree totally, though, that the guys wouldn't have wanted the spirit of the TT to be changed. They wouldn't have wanted the event to be any other way. But they may have chosen to die differently.

Exactly the same thoughts here Simon...
Sad for the marshall too, is it true he walked across the track?
:(
"She" was crossing to check on a rider who had stopped. Both killed instantly.
Used to read and watch the old video's of Ron and Gus - cant believe they are both dead. Very sad for both Gus and the Marshalls familly...

You cant start banning activities that we are all free to do just because of a few deaths. The riders all know the risks and they happily take them, likewise the marshalls and spectators also know the risks.
As long as everyone is happy then why should it be banned? We are adults and free to make choices about what we do. If I decided to race, marshall or watch the TT I know the risks and that is my choice.
RIP to everyone that lost their life over the week, sad losses :(
the moose 15 June 2005, 18:02 What a shocker. I've met both Ronnie and Gus at trackdays, and they seemed like really nice guys. Have to say though, you'd not get me doing the TT for love nor money; I, too, would like to expire in my bed, and the thought of hitting a street light (protected by nothing other than a straw bale) at 100+ just doesn't bear thinking about.
Respect to those who do it, and I'd not want to ban it, but at the same time, I'm not going to lose too much sleep over those who knew the risks, and chose to take them. Double 'ard *******s, the lot of 'em, but truly insane.
ScooByer Trade 15 June 2005, 18:09 I don't know these top riders and i'm a rider myself so our hearts and feelings are with their families.
Dave R 15 June 2005, 21:01 Like many on here, I too am a regular reader of PB. I too felt as if I 'knew' Gus and hearing this made me very sad. He was such a nice bloke.
My thoughts and sympathies go out to the families left behind.

ARRON BIRD 18 June 2005, 08:42 Met them all and had many a good chat with Ron and Gus.
Very sad and these type of accidents should never happen.

Remember all the PB mags and video nasties, what came across from all was what a nice bloke....a real loss :(

Well said ... it's too easy to mourn those in the public eye - but we should all remember that they were both there (presumably) for the love of the sport. And the loss felt by those who knew them personally will be equally great.
RIP both, and sympathies to friends and families of all those who have lost their lives at the IOM.

ScooByer Trade 20 June 2005, 19:58 I must apologise Mrs April Bolster was the marshall involved in the accident with Gus Scott and may they rest in peace and sorry again. Sorry for the confusion Pete.

No apology needed ScooByer - I was applauding your sentiment, not trying to correct you.
