View Full Version : Getting rid of Dock leaves.
Johnny50 08 June 2005, 13:36 Right,
State of play is, moved into a house over a year ago, and we've now made our way to getting the back garden into some kind of order..
but, the dock leaves are a nightmare.
Have put weedkiller on them, seems to have done the trick, and am now in the process of digging them up (no easy task)
Does anyone have a solution to keeping them away permanently ??
Thanks
Johnny
Chip Sengravy 08 June 2005, 19:11 Invite Ray Mears to camp out in the back garden, but dont give him a toilet. They'll be gone in a month :D
*Nate* 08 June 2005, 20:58 The weedkiller i would use, would be 'Glyphosate' , but be careful, as anything it touches that is green will die, I would paint it onto leaves when they are at full size, and let the weedkiller do the trick.
Glyphosate it systemic, so kills weeds (or any plants) at the root .... No more problems.

fast bloke 09 June 2005, 01:26 are they in the lawn? they don't appreciate getting cut once a week - the only things that do are gras and daisys (sp)
Try something like Tough Weed if they are in the borders - looks like prit stik, but kills weeds (and probably small children and pesky cats as well :D )
Johnny50 09 June 2005, 08:20 Luckily they're not on the lawn.
There seems to have been a lot of earth moved, and just left, thats where they've appeared.
I cant beleive how deep down they go !
Thanks for your suggestions, guess it's a case of trying something stronger.
CrisPDuk 10 June 2005, 14:51 I'd agree with Nate on the glyphosphate solution. Roundup and Tumbleweed are two names it's marketed as.
steffiraf 10 June 2005, 17:04 Roundup is very good as already stated and the good thing with it is you can plant in the soil again after about 6 weeks. If you want permanent weed free soil, use pathclear, that stays in the soil and prevents seedlings (in fact anything) from growing. HTH
*Nate* 10 June 2005, 20:51 If you go the Glyphosate route ..... Don't bother with Roundup and the like, get the concentrate, dilute it to whatever strength you want, and kill anything green ;) . Read the labels, it will tell you the Glyphosate content, cheapest place I know for concentrated Glyphosate is Wilkinsons, but for the sake of saving a couple of quid, B&Q and the like do it.

fallwood 11 June 2005, 00:40 What you need is Trick, its an amitrole/diuron based weedkiller that kills absolutely anything (including trees, cats, dogs, small children etc). I use it at my caravan storage facility to control weeds and its the best thing ive come across, its residual and stays in the ground for up to 18 months, only trouble is that you wont be able to grow anything for a while where you've sprayed. I get it from my local agricultural supplier but I dont know if its availalbe to the general public as its so lethal.
fallwood 11 June 2005, 00:42 Here ya go , these guys sell it . http://www.amenitywise.co.uk/trik-1kg-p-92.html , dont forget to wear a mask and gloves when handling it or you will make yourself quite ill.
