I have to clear out a pond (quite large) thats pretty full of muck (dead leaves etc) smells & looks like sewage ! Before I roll my sleeves up & take ages to remove all this by hand - are there any tips or vacuum products that cam make short work of it?

I had to do our by hand :( Ours is about 4' x 9' and about 3' deep at the deepest point. It took hours with a bucket :( Then after clearing out all the muck & about 25 frogs :D it took hours to fill back up again with a hose.

Just a thought but if you want to do it a lazy way (may take a while) you could take the hose from the pond pump & redirect it into a drain somehow? Just sit back & let the water level slowely go down :)

I supposed it would be possible to hire a solids handling pump and pump out most of the water and sludge to a drain or part of the garden. Then wellies, buckets and graft I'm afraid. Is it lined? If so you can at least brush muck to one area. D

That how I do it, just get some 20mm inside dia. hose, stick it on the end of pump and away you go :)

Messy job though, we had frogs spawn too.

There is a vacuum type attachment you can get, that fits to any ordinary hosepipe, that somehow cleans the bottom and sides of your pond, seen them at my local aquarium centre :)

The Pondovac is OK for removing sludge but will get blocked by leaves and will not suck up cleanish water. IMHO not the tool for emptying a whole pond (I thought the same until I tried it). I'd just use a submersible to pump out most of the pond and then brush and plastic (if you have liner) shovel and bucket.
