View Full Version : Can someone explain(in simpleton terms!)...
...how to move a light switch? I'm going to be getting a new fridge/freezer, but the new one is a lot taller than the one at the moment and will hide the light switch making it difficult to get to, so i need to move it to the opposite side of the door. Any help available?
John WRX 05 June 2005, 13:22 Depends on how much mess you dont mind making to be honest mate, ideally you need to run a new chase down the wall where you want the new location to be and cut out a square hole for the metal backbox.
Lift floorboards upstairs and locate the cable/s running to the existing switch, disconnect from existing and pull up through the wall and drop them down to the new switch location then reconnect.
Sounds difficult but its not that bad.
powerman1 05 June 2005, 13:59 Buy a joint box and a length of 1.5mm t&e and if its not long enough you will have to joint it out , dont forget the green sleeving for the bare earth wire.should take about an hour if straight forward

Well i can't go down through the boards, as it has been tiled and cemented in and above it a strange set-up. It's about 10 inches from the door edge on the right and i want it on the left. I suppose i'm looking at cutting up the plaster board, a channel, and taking the wire along it and making an extension onto it? IYSWIM?
alanbell 05 June 2005, 21:42 Could you take the archatrive off and do the chase behind that then pin it back on ,
Get a sparky in - Dead easy !
Chip Sengravy 07 June 2005, 14:25 can you just not move it nearer the door frame?
get a remote control light switch
New To Scoob 08 June 2005, 16:32 " Officially " you cannot touch it due to the new Part P of the building regs.
John.
Touch what? I have no idea what this thread is about!
:D;)
Dalthegooner 08 June 2005, 19:27 Get some mini trunking, some 1.5mm twin and earth, some green sleeving, some connector blocks, a single blank plate, surface pattress and a 20mm grommet. Chase out a little bit of wall tight to the existing switch box getting you access to one of the knockouts in the box, punch out the knockout and fit the grommet into the hole. Cut a small piece out of the back of the mini trunking and run it around the door frame to the new switch position with the bit cut out over the chase into the back box and fit the pattress at the end of the trunking. Run the cable from the old switch position to the new switch position, connect the cables together, like for like in the old switch position using the connector blocks and fit the blank plate. Fit the switch to the new switch position, connecting the earth (with sleeving) to the terminal at the back of the pattress. The red to the common terminal of the switch and the black (preferably with a bit of red insulating tape or red sleeving on) to the L1 terminal of the switch, screw the switch back and bobs your uncle.
PS Don't forget to turn the power off when you carry out the work.
Buy a fridge and a seperate chest freezer :D or buy a lamp instead !
KeithRS 25 June 2005, 15:18 Replace internal fridge lamp with a 100w rated version. Now the fridge door being opened is your new lightswitch.
Seriously though, if the wall is a cavity type, the knock a few holes in it from the existing switch point to the new, going over the top of the door frame. Best place to make the holes will be at the vertical framing locations, as you will have to chisel out a small check to allow the cable to pass. Once done plaster up the holes and fit new switch.
Does sound a lot of work though just to fit a new fridge. Due to the refridgeration element at the back of the fridge/freezer, wont there be anough clear space still to access the existing switch??
Just a thought.
Cheers for the thought, but the fridge would have to sit out about 10 inches from the wall to give you enough room to put your arm round the back.
Ended up turning the power off and taking the wire back up to the attic, then feeding it down, through one truss to the new hole for the switch.
Job's a good un!:D But you didn't see me, right?! ;)
