View Full Version : Why do you ride?
Jamesemt 03 June 2005, 19:00 I originally got into biking because after a fast car it felt like the next step. I soon realised that becoming competent takes years, and I've noticed that my attitude has started to change.
I don't commute very often - so filtering isn't an issue.
It's always been about speed, only now it's more about the actual ride. There's just something about biking - people call it freedom, but it's not. It just a certain feeling of being out in the open which elevates the whole experience to a higher level...it's more than just a journey...still love cars, though for different reasons :D :D
Danny B 03 June 2005, 19:26 I ride because I am on a mission to find pslewis and blind him with my highbeams.
I had a Pug 205GTi, moved on to a late classic Scooby and felt very disappointed by the experience. Regretted it within 24 hours, and decided to realise the dream that had been nagging since my mid-teens.
Use the bike all the time - rain, wind, night, sun, daylight - whatever. Love it all :). Not too fussed about the speed, it's the overall sensation that does it for me. Though I still appreciate the ease with which you can jump in a car and pick up a couple of bags of shopping, I must do 1000 miles on the bike for every 50 I do in the car :).

Puff The Magic Wagon! 03 June 2005, 20:40 Its what my business does & I do it because I can't expect others to do it for me without speaking from experience plus I enjoy it :D
Well, I have 8 bike in the garage...I have to ride one at least of them, otherwise I may as well open it as a museum ;)

You will never become 'competent'. As soon as you assume that... you're dead meat. ;)
In my book, every ride is a learning experience. :)

8? WTF? Give us a list!
I have a mate with 7 and he's nuts cause he hardly ever rides any of them!
Lathafummi 04 June 2005, 10:01 Because its fun
Beastie 04 June 2005, 11:45 Because it heightens the senses and riding the bike is like having a mistress without the complications. :-)

I took this yesterday evening on the way home from work. Seems some people like the wind in their hair whilst others like their ass in the air :)
Danny B 04 June 2005, 15:13 What a dick, fancy riding with no gloves ;)

Oeer, where do I start?? :D OK, in no particular order:
BSA A10 Gold Flash
Dominator 88
Scott Flying Squirrel (1949 model)
850 Commando Interstate
Kawasaki Mach III H1
Suzuki GT750 (kettle) - in bits
Ariel Red Hunter (2 actually)
Honda (super)Magna V40 (well that one is my dads really - posers bike)
Bet you thought it was going to be a load of nippon rice buners didn't you? ;)
I agree he obviously doesnt know what happens when any skin is exposed even at slow speed. Imagine having skin grafts for years after the accident, its similar to 3rd degree burns. Also dickhead's wearing jeans pisses me off. But then again he is probably a yank, they are inbred mongrels anyway! Oops just noticed it appears to be swiss plate!
What a dick, fancy riding with no gloves ;)
shaunywrx 05 June 2005, 18:05 Because i can!
brybusa 05 June 2005, 20:22 Because they are the ultimate rush..

lol... all them boots and for what? Her fat bum will certainly suffer. I can't even see a hint of knicker!
Anyway, back on topic... I would like to speak for my Husband.
Since I have known him (5 years) he has had a busa, r1, suzuki something and now a zx12r. He says he doesn't like the confines of a car. He likes speed, mad speed, and freedom. He likes the instant accelleration and loves twistie roads. He has been a biker since he was 16 and has never owned a car although he can drive and drives mine when he has too (through gritted teeth for obvious reasons LOL )
dexter 05 June 2005, 23:33 Bikes are addictive...........take care.
I ended up having 19 of them in six years (only one at a time BTW), and I lost a boat load of money in the process.
Having said that, I would do it all again, it was awesome (crap word, I know, but in this case it fits the bill).
Soulgirl 05 June 2005, 23:37 What makes me laugh is people complaining about the cost of a subaru. A true bikers costs are phenomenal. My hubby has a new back tyre roughly every 3 months (and they aint cheap) and a new front one every 4-5 months. Chains and sprockets are throw away and brake pads a plenty. Yep... he plays hard :D
DRUNKNORGY 06 June 2005, 12:21 Unless its a dirtbike, he should get 20,000 miles from a chainset if its lubed regularly.
Tyres are a killer but you can get matched pairs for £150 mail order (£20 fitted for loose wheels).
I am running intermediate wets ATM and I'll be doing well if I get 1500 miles from the back (but then they were a freebee so I can't complain ;) ) .
If cost is an issue, its much cheaper to run a 600 supersports than an R1 type bike and there is little difference between them on the trackdays :D
Why do i ride..... for appreciation and the fellowship of other riders. Also for the speed and mud. I have an R6 that i'm getting to terms with and a YZF426. Green lanes around Essex all morning Sunday on the thumper then back to pick up the R6 and take the little lady out for lunch. Other than my mate breaking his wrist in the morning, a perfect day.
Oh the other reason i ride, you'd never get thousands of car drivers meeting at Dunton, contributing to the Air Ambulance charity and then riding to Harwich for the sake of it.. Us bikers are always looking for a reason to ride somewhere.

MMM...tyres on a superbike are the biggest expense for sure but bikes are cheaper than cars to run
Most bikers service their bikes themselves, a dealer service history adds naff all to the value
A set of brake pads are what, £75 all round?..and 30mins to fit
As for chain and sprockets, lube them after every ride and as mentioned 20K is easily achievable
And as for fuel, well I knew my Hayabusa was good on fuel compared to my car and Performance Bikes this month did a little test..
Nearly 50MPG at a steady 100MPH from a GSXRthou..Enough to make a scoob owner slit their wrists!
DRUNKNORGY 06 June 2005, 14:44 I am getting over 60 mpg on the roads cruising @80-90 and about 25-30 mpg on track days from my ZX6R.
Bloody hell what model is that one? My 2001 R6 doesnt get that cruising, mind you I have never cruised on it anyway maybe thats why!

I agree with brybusa 100% sprocket/chains last ages if looked after. zx12r's, blackbirds and hayabusa's shred tyres much faster mainly due to large torque/bhp going through rear wheel, which flattens it in no time, even if you are not a particularly fast rider.

dtriggs 06 June 2005, 16:05 I tend to get about 45 mpg on my Fazer thou although it is mainly London commuting. I got 52 mpg on my Fabia vRS this weekend....
Bikes are far cheaper to run though - depreciation is the primary cost of cars - but with bikes the losses are tiny in comparison. I have lost a matter of hundreds in the last 3 years covering 4 bikes, yet have lost many thousands in that time with cars !!!!
brybusa 06 June 2005, 16:54 Another good point dtriggs
Depreciation is minimal
My bro lost nearly 8K on his BMW in less than a year...Could have bought almost any bike for that...
Even thrashing your R6, on the road, I bet it doesnt dip much below 35-40MPG
I must admit I never really thought about the fuel economy of my bikes until this article, I just rev/ride em to what ever I can get away with , but I knew it was far more economic than the car..
My god, now the bikers are going on about MPG :cuckoo:
Surely if it was that important you'd be all riding Honda CUBs and Royal Enfield Diesels :p
