I am looking at two coilover kits…



Gaz Subaru Coilover suspension kit & HKS Hyper D Coilover Kit.



Don’t have a clue of what coilovers do or what to look out for when buying…Also of the 2 above two which would be a better buy?

Both near the same mark £500.


Any help really appreciated..

Why are you really looking for coil-overs?
Have you anti roll bars and a good alignment done already?

If you are hell bent on having them I would find the extra $$$ and have units that are well known and supplied by someone who actually knows about the right springs for your needs, ie fast road or Drifting or hill climbing etc.

You could do far worse than contacting this threads Sponsor and the ATS units.
Won't be £500 though.

Seriously, if you "don't know what to look for", why do you want them ?

i have bilstein coilovers and anti roll bars on my MY95 V-LTD and they are quite extreme!

didn't know you could get coilovers for £500 :)

add another £350 and you can have yourself a set of AST's ;)

really i didn't know that??? :eek: bilsteins are about £1200 and thats alot of bleeding money!

sorry, for jumping in on this thread, but i have a 02 wrx an was thinking about coilovers because i want to lower the car, an have been told coilovers are much better than just changing the springs etc,
i will be geetin 18" or 19" alloys soon, an i don't want to lose the smooth ride, but don't want any scrubbing either.

what would be the best route to go down?

So long as you don't count the VAT...

I go back to asking what you want from the mod.
I went to coil-overs to get a hard ride(of my choice), adjustable ride height (and therefore the ability to corner weight the car), and adjustable damping (to suit a variety of spring rates) for my hill climbing Sti V3.

If you want a straight height drop and keep the comfort of the factory car then possibly coil-overs are not the right route.
Coil-overs can be made/set/adjusted to give a great ride and performance but so can the same effect be achieved with a simpler mod, ie quality springs on a good condition stock damper.

If you like modified cars then coil-overs will add to the fun of the car and getting it right, but there are mods to do well before adding Coil-overs IMHO.

Chassis tuning the Impreza is an interesting subject, and many will have viable reasons to approach it in different ways.
The stock system is good (especially the Sti system), but change many things and you will corner so much quicker, safer, and with confidence, but ride quality will be compromised and some ability will be lost on some surfaces/conditions.
As for 17/18/19inch wheels:
I went to P1 17's from stock 16's and back to 16's. So much better than the 17's (except for the looks) but cornering hard in competition and the benefits of 16's over 17's is quite marked.
This is all personal thoughts, and my car as it now is may not be to other's taste/feel etc; all part of the fun!

i don't want to coilovers for performance as i don't think i'll be putting my car on the track as a competition car, only once or twice on fun track days.

i will be having alot of audio equipment filling the boot in the future, so because of the weight the suspension will have to be uprated.

can you suggest any decent priced shocks an springs to get?

As I've said before, I support Traders who come to the Threads to participate and their customers come to the threads too. Any Trader who publically stands up must be good guys (and look at the Litchfield 25...)

I was today this close ----> . <----- from buying some HKS coilovers for £400! :D

Though after reading all the threads here and a last miniute chat with Andy, who kinda talked me out of it i decided not to buy ...as i only use my car for everyday driving...

So have now considered doing a groupbuy for the AYB AGX shocks, which i believe were £315 for a full set delivered to your door...though ofcourse 5 people are needed... :thumb:
