Gonna hard wire in my shift lamp but Im using the *** lighter for my Origin B2 so i need a 12v feed but dont fancy taking the dash/centre console apart.
Where cal i get 12v trouble free?

I'll be running the lamp up the A-piller (drivers side) so some of the drivers side is coming out.

can I take a feed from the stereo or hehind the stearing collum? if so what colour are the wires please and where?

 

If your cars a classic then the back of the fog light switch is ideal.
Remove the lower part of the dash by undoing the two bolts at the lowest corners (one just above the bonnet release) and the plastic screw type unit in the side (you can only see it with the door open) and pull the whole unit forward to reveil the back of the switches.
A quick search on here will reveal the correct wire but IIRC it was the purple one (could be mistaken - its a long time since I tapped into mine!)

 

Trying to think why a fog light switch would have a 12V ignition controlled feed. The foglights only come on when the lights are on so I would only expect to see a side light controlled 12V feed. Or is this too simplistic?

Radio or hazard lights are good sources of both ignition controlled and direct 12V feeds.

Sorry don't know more about classics.

 

I took my 12v feed for a turbo timer from the rear fog lamp switch, easy and reliable without ripping your knuckles to pieces, trying to get behind the centre console...

Having just done this at the weekend (MY00 Classic)....

Removing the trim below the steering wheel / drivers side foot well reveals a fuse box. The yellow/red wire coming out of the blue connector (I think) on the front of the fuse box is the feed for the *** lighter. Check it using a multimeter, with the ignition on you should get +12V or thereabouts, pull the *** lighter fuse and make sure it drops to 0V, if so you have found the correct wire. Splice into it for ignition switched 12V with either a scotch clip or solder it.

If you want an illumination feed its the purple wire with grey flecks going into the rear fog lamp switch.

Use a ring crimp and the 10mm bolt for the steering column for earth, already had one ring crimp on there on mine so guessed it would be the ideal spot

 

dont use scotch locks there crap, and are a sure fire way of getting problems in the future !! believe me i have repaired loads of jobs where people have used them

 

Scotchlocks = sure fire.... LOL!

 

I was gonna up scotchlocks as well

 

no seriously dont, they cut into the cable and eventually it will break. just cut, solder and tape / heatshrink. its the only sensible way.
