Totally up for the next one and any after that, even when the girlie comes too live in ESSEX , I will still travel to do this, such a great bunch of people and such great scenery (When the clouds aren't sitting ontop of the hills!).

My daughter loved the day - well except when she miss read the directions and we missed the turn out of the pub! But then so did the next group

Sorry to the guys following - we waited but no show so set of, and came across Marv & co (paul)

Keep them coming Marv & Paul

was a bit taken back have to admit, seeing the pics posted damn brings back the memories, did make me think quite hard about it, not just the tour but the whole buying another impreza.

have to say for the rest of the tour after i was a bit of a nervous passenger about it but tony did a fine job of keeping the car straight and true on the road, cheers tony.

thing that realy finally sealed it was jumping in my mums car to go to chilwell last night, first thing i thought, damn i miss the power of my scoob!!

so bring on the next one!!!!

only problem now, need to find a passenger seat for the next one!!! lmao

I know that I am opening myself up to a barage of abuse by posting this, even though on this occasion I wasn't there, but we have had similar warnings of this type of accident happening before. I remember an incident just outside Bakewell around a year ago, where a car was badly damaged and a young girl hurt her foot.

On reflection of Sunday's events and of seeing video clips, pictures etc, do we really want to carry on in this fashion ??

1. Someone WILL eventuallly get killed or seriously injured

Remember these cars are highly tuned and I doubt anyone of our calibre can actually drive them to there full potential safely

2. We are bringing the attention of ourselves to others outside of our circle

3. Not doing our insurance premiums much good either. I for one have ahd a 50% increase in my premium this year and have never had a claim since owning a Scooby

4. The reputation of the marque

I for one love the Peak Tours and have had a lot of fun on them but I don't want to have my car damaged, hurt someone else or myself.

I have also noted that the number of people going on these has increased since first conceived a few years back. I think if the numbers are to increase like this, then we need to have more than one route on the day with a common meeting point at the start and end. This will stop incidents at the tunnel where everyone seemed to be spectating as drivers drove through ? I'm not surpirsed that there was an accident here.

So YES we should continue BUT we need to have a re think on how we organsie and run them and this shouldn't just be left to Paul & Marv who do a great job. Paul always puts guidlines on the way we should treat the roads, but this is being ignored. It is our responsibilty as a group to make sure we drive safely and not the individuals.

Think you have raised some valid points there Steve.

Myself I tend to stick with the guys I know and trust. One of the things I have noticed is a lot of posts saying 'I want to be in the FAST group'.

Lets be fair - they are all pretty fast.

i dont think that comment is a fair one!

Only reason I used that comment was because on the last peak tour I was leading the second group and we caught the so called “fast group” up. It was just a friendly comment for the leading guys. I for one do not think this could affect the driving speed of individuals!

I for one know my limits! I learned a lot through 6 years of karting as a youngster.

everyone's got their own opinion though.

i do agree with some of the above comments though.

Rich.

Another point is out of the twenty or so cars that started, more than 10% came back damaged in some way ? That can't be right can it

The fast group on the last tour was caught up because all but the leader decided to go the wrong way. The leader then had to wait and the convince the others thy had gone wrong !!!

Rich - the comment I made wasnt particularly aimed at you, nor was I making a critisism of anyone in any of the leading groups.

When I say I stay with the people I know and trust I am talking about guys I have been driving with for a while, just as the guys in the first group out always tend to stick together. Everyone in the group is familiar with each others style of driving.

I made no comment about anyones ability!!

So if I offended you I am sorry, that was not my intention.
I have never been on one of these things where we didn't catch the group in front up, it always tends to happen.

LOL... thats coz the leader decided against having a radio, and the rest of us had no idea we had gone so wrong and we couldnt communicate with said leader
Ah well
Radios are a MUST imho..

I seem to remember waiting for everyone after the snake about 5 mins IIRC

So- whos for a group buy on Track days!!! Far safer!

Chrome,

I wasn't offered a radio that day and I'm not sure if radios are a good idea ??

It might be the radios that are distracting people.

I for one believe that a lead of a group should have an experienced navigator. My uncle who navigates for me always re plots the map onto a decent map (OS) and can tell me exaclty what is likely to happen ahead. Good navigators seem few and far between.

The lead car should dictate the pace as I do.

The whole thing needs a rethink and I have already spoken to Paul about this

Its hard to lead a group safely and easy to get moaned at if the pace isn't fast enough, but it isw much easier to follow than be followed.

The tunnel incident seemed to be a complete farse to me having seen the video. Cars need to continue on there own journey and not watch others. You can't even see what is happening at the opposite end of the tunnel so why push your luck ????

Anyway I may post a new thread so we can get people's ideas on how we can avoid this in the future.

PS I must say I hope everyone is OK though.

Track days are a good idea and myself and Marv had a great day a few weeks back, But we hired a track car and didn't use our Subaru's. Subaru's do not make good track cars and only those who have driven Caterham's, Westfields will agree with this. Talk to Marv, he is now convinced.

Steve

Could have sworn CW42 offered a spare?
Well; my passenger enjoyed using the radio and the banter.. I never spoke once into it
too busy concentrating

Agreed about navigator.
Good navigators are worth their weight in gold.

Agreee about the tunnel on the evidence preseted..
I wasnt there though, so cant really comment.

AFAIK, no-one has any severe injuries from sunday.

I'm booked to do an Airfield day in may. Will be using the scoob tho.
Be damned if I mod then dont drive it

Look forward to the new thread mate.

Having come on a number of the wyioc runs in the past, but missed this one, I can honestly say they are the best runs organised by far. Marv is a stickler for keeping people in small groups, which unfortunatly never pans out. I was in the "fast" group on the one before, got the film to prove it, and it was a big problem not being able to communicate with the "leader". Radios have proved there weight in gold on many of our smaller SMACS runs. The abilitly to warn others of dangers ahead, turnings, police or hazards is second to none. Steve777 has a good navigator, just think how much more useful he would have been sharing his comments over the radio?
From what I've seen of your tunnel footage, that really was an accident waiting to happen, it reminded me of a McD's car park gathering, all blasting through the tunnel like that.
Yes, we do drive some seriously fast cars, and some of the people that come out haven't the skill or experience to handle them properly, some people are also unlucky
On our recent run to north wales, we had around 16 cars in total, no incidents, no stopping to spectate at a particular stretch of road, just straight driving, across challenging and scenic country lanes. It wasn't without incident though, as one of our new guys decided to overtake rather dangerously, causing an oncoming car to brake quite hard. As organisers and heads of our respective clubs, what do we do? Ban these people? Name and shame them on scoobynet?
I for one can't stand up and say I've never had a moment similar, happened to me on the snake late last year So, all we can do is try to impart some sense of resposibility and maturity in the groups we go out with, and keep intact the name and kudos of the subaru fraternity.
Keep up the good work guys, and dont let this incident laden run put you off. Just think, if nothing happens on the next one, we'll all be sat in the pub after with nothing to talk about

chris.

Thats why i have sat nav in there as an extra aid, it cant tell u whats gonna happen but it gives you a picture of the road ahead for a good 1/2 mile or so, so u know when there's a sharp left or right turn coming up or a sereis of twisty roads, so you decide for yourself at what speed you think is appropiate.
