Default 1989 Merc 230E

Have been offered one, apparently its about 500 quid, tidy enough with a bit of Tax and Test, just thinking of running it whilst I save up for something interesting and getting rid of the Rover 200 BRM.

What are they like, seem to be well regarded and I know the owner of this one so is it a good bet.

Only concern is the fuel consumption, dont fancy it if ity wont crack 25 mpg !

I had a 300 of the same year and it was fantastic.

Bullet proof. Mine did 25+ do the 230 should get closer to 30mpg

Might be a bit more than 500 but having had a trawl, nobody seems to have a bad word to say about them, not that thirsty, not too slow and consumables are cheap.

Quite keen on the idea, and hopefully the owner will keep his Irish reg plate !

I've had a 230E (4dr) and 230TE (estate) and both didn't get much over 20-25mpg. Only a 4 cylinder block, so don't expect a smooth V6 or anything!

Easy to maintain though, as still uses a carb!

Dont expect much for 500 quid, quite like the idea of a Merc that I can leave anywhere and not care about, then scrap it (via Ebay) when something breaks.

economy isn't great 25mpg on average, they only have 136bhp so are pretty slow. Especially compared with a 200 BRM. I used to have a BRM and had a 1995 E220 merc as a run around last year. The E220 has the more modern fuel injected ali 16v engine with 150bhp and that wasn't partically quick.

They are bullet proof though and are the last of the over enginered mercs

I'm picking up a 1987 300SE on Tuesday.

150k, FSH, 8 months' MOT, taxed and without a spot of rust on it.

£360.
