If you have an Ikea nearby, their worktops seem reasonable and there are often many to be had in the bargain basement (damaged/end of line/no packaging etc) section. Also, http://www.rixonway.co.uk/website/ are worth a call. They supply the sort of kitchens that councils put in chav slums, so can be cheap as chips. My cousin used to design for them.
