View Full Version : Digital SLR's (Again)
Nevetas 10 September 2004, 13:12 Time for the essex camera car to get a bad boy SLR to complement the bad boy video camera.
What shall it be?
1) Canon 20D (out some time this month)
2) Konica Minolta Dynax 7 (new, has anti shake)
3) Nikon D100
4) Something Else
Or if anyone or here is thinking of upgrading, will buy used....
AndyC_772 10 September 2004, 13:15 (2), the Canon 20D would be my choice, but you need to go into a camera shop and play with a few to get a feel for which one you prefer.
The 20D and D100 are a class ahead of the Dynax - if you're going to be using it on the move, the Canon plus one or two IS-equipped lenses would be my suggestion.
Nevetas 10 September 2004, 13:19 Yeah, in my heart the 20d was also in pole posistion :D
The shop are expecting a delivery next week.
Nevetas 10 September 2004, 13:34 MmmMMMmmMMMMm
This deal on a D100 isn't bad!

Geezer 10 September 2004, 14:01 Depends on what your budget is, but since you mention the 20D, I suspect it's a fair amount!
I would say get the D70 over the D100 if you choose Nikon. It has a better sensor, more updated software and is cheaper. By all consensus better than the D100 (or you could wait for the D200).
If it's Canon, get a 10D. Prices willdrop sharply once the 20D is announced, all the gullible people will upgrade, allowing the nearly as good 10D but now alot cheaper to flood onto the second hand market.
The Minolta is an unknown quantity, but I'm sure it will be good.
As for something else, the Pentax has had very good reviews.
Geezer
Nevetas 10 September 2004, 14:03 Good Advice, 10d could well be an option then.
OK think we have a new list:
1) Canon 20d
2) Canon 10d
3) Nikon D70
darlodge 10 September 2004, 14:05 Have you got any lenses already, if so what lenses are they?
I've have the 20D if it were me, but them I'm using canon already.
The list price of the 20D is about £1300 but now one has them in stock yet, well not as far as I know.

alcazar 10 September 2004, 14:13 Just got my D70 last week after a wait of 2 months for stock. I love it. It's first outing was to a niece's wedding, where the professional photographer told me he was getting one for his work.

Jasoon 10 September 2004, 14:48 I've got a 10D and its worth its wait in gold as far as im concerned......
If you want a real bad boy digital slr go of a 1Ds
Nevetas 10 September 2004, 14:51 Ouch! Can't afford the 1ds :(
Yeah I think I'm going to try and get a cheap 10d once the 20's come out.
Jasoon 10 September 2004, 15:15 The 10D is a really really good piece of kit ,and well worth the money I've had photos printed poster size and you would be hard pushed to tell they where from a digital SLR
Nevetas 10 September 2004, 15:22 OK here it is then, final choice!
1) New Nikon D70
or
2) Used Canon 10D
darlodge 10 September 2004, 15:34 Some places still have new 10D's in stock. Granted price won't be the same as a used model but it should still be the same as a new D70 as the 20D's will drive them down.
Darren
STi-Frenchie 10 September 2004, 15:50 OK here it is then, final choice!
1) New Nikon D70
or
2) Used Canon 10D
If those are your final choices, and you have no other investments in glass, go with the Nikon. I'm biased but it's slightly better than the 10D (IMBO :)). The quality difference between Nikon and Canon these days is negligible so you'll be happy with either of those...the best thing you can do is to put the best glass you can in front of the camera body - that's where you will really see the difference in quality - buy Canon glass for Canon, and Nikon glass for Nikon and you won't go far wrong.
mattstant 10 September 2004, 16:21 nowt wrong with a 300D had one for a month now and cant put it down
alcazar 10 September 2004, 17:58 nowt wrong with a 300D had one for a month now and cant put it down
That'd put me off or a start.............is it leaking Superglue? How do you go to the toilet?.....................I'll get me coat:D:

IWatkins 10 September 2004, 18:26 Used 10D, 20D once out or a 1D MkII.
There *might* be a used 10D here in a few months time as now I've seen the 20D spec., I'm thinking of moving to the 1D MkII.
Cheers
Ian
homerdog 10 September 2004, 19:43 The ironic thing is that the 300d is probably far more capable than the average photographer's ability, so who needs a 20d...
ps anyone want to buy a 300d, genuine reason for sale (upgrading) ;)
swiss scooby 10 September 2004, 20:51 IWatkins, these could have been my words. If I go for an upgrade then it will be a real upgrade like from 10D --> 1D MKII (not from 10D --> 20D). There are still rumours around of a possible new Canon release called 3D (between 20D and 1D MKII). Let's wait for Photokina. ;)
Nevetas, I would buy a 10D or bite the apple right away and go for a 20D. 10D might still be the better choice since you could add some nice class to your camera. Glass is the most important thing, Body comes second (IMO).
BOB.T 10 September 2004, 21:18 Canon, all the rest are just messin:p:D:D
IWatkins 10 September 2004, 23:21 Swiss scooby,
Aye, I'm waiting on the Photokina announcements, just in case. If there is nothing there, the 1D MkII is mine :D
Cheers
Ian
Nevetas 11 September 2004, 00:37 Homerdog: How much do you want for your 300??
Ian: Can't you sell me yours now, and go and get a badboy 1d MKII. You know you want to!!!! :D
swiss scooby 11 September 2004, 07:57 Ian,
exactly, Photokina will be my final decision maker. :)
Nevetas, I would sell you mine but I don't want to miss any shots before a new camera is mine. But then again, I probably keep the 10D as a stealth & light backup camera anyway. The 10D and 60D are still excellent cameras. ;)
Cheers,
Daniel
Nevetas 11 September 2004, 09:20 :D

Yes, saw yesterday that Ebuyer.com were doing the 300D & lens for £609 inc vat.
However, to me, the instant-on feature (0 sec turnon time) of the Nikon D70 wins over the Canon every single day. I would have bought the Canon at that price had it had this feature....to me, it's worth a few hundred more solely for that feature alone!
pslewis 11 September 2004, 11:52 300D?????????
Har Har Har ....... so, so 'yesterday'
Its had its 2 months in the limelight
Todays top dog is the D70 - tomorrows will be the 20D
The secondhand route just HAS to be where the clever money would go (benefit from someone elses impatience!) :D

AndyC_772 11 September 2004, 11:53 Batteries aren't that expensive - get the grip, load it up with both batteries and the camera will stay on all day.
My D30 took a couple of seconds to start up but I don't think I ever actually lost a photo I really wanted because of it. I lost photos by not having a CF card loaded, and by having the lens cap on, and by the AF not being quick enough in the dark, but never because of the start-up delay.
Nevetas 11 September 2004, 14:19 I've been offered a 2nd hand 10d, body only, for £600
Is this a fair price, or should I be looking for a 2nd hand D70 instead?
Jasoon 11 September 2004, 14:38 I would say £600 is a good price for a used 10D
Nevetas 11 September 2004, 15:08 Is a 10d better than a d70?
