Good advice from Ian - but just to throw a spanner in the works I feel obliged to point out that my 50mm f/1.4 lens rarely gets used. Sometimes I stick it on the end of a set of extension tubes and use it for macros, but ordinarily it's the 24-70L zoom every time. Ultra-wide apertures have such shallow DoF that I rarely find my whole subject in focus if I use the lens wide open, so it's pretty redundant most of the time.
Of course, it's a darn sight cheaper than the 24-70 f/2.8 L...

Nikon does not have 0.0s turn on. Yes, it is a small number but not 0.0 ;)
Doesn't matter anyway. If you are paying that sort of money for a camera you should be skilled enough to have it switched on before you will want to use it. Never understood what the big deal is with quick turn on. Shutter reaction, yes, power on, no.
Ian,
I've got a powershot S40 compact that takes approx. 4 seconds before it's ready to shoot :( without playing with the modes etc. My EOS 5 is ready as soon as I've turned the control dial :) (neither takes into account focus lock etc) I know a digital SLR is now quick but my S40 doesn't exactly lend itself to grab-shots unless you wander round with it turned on all the time which is a good way to drain the batteries quickly :(
I'm building up to potentially getting a 20D so can hopefully eliminate this gripe ;). At least the shutter lag is small - 65ms should cover most stuff I'll ever take :D
